Iron Man

Successful Secrets of the Sexual Kind by [personal profile] atrata Rec+
2800 words. Five times they don't have sex, and think about it anyway.

This is cute and hot and pretty much the best thing ever. This is totally my canon now. They totally fantasise about each other like this.

Almost No One Makes It Out by [personal profile] atrata Rec+
28,000 words. What would have happened if Tony hadn't been born filthy rich? A military AU.

Okay, everyone and their mother has already recced this fic, and for good reason. It is just that awesome. It's an AU of the first movie, and Tony is not the wealthy playboy of canon, but just an ordinary guy. He's still Tony, though; there's just a lot fewer people willing to take his shit. I really loved how well thought out this was, how everything is different, but the same. And most of all, I loved the scene with Tony's trial, which had me literally laughing out loud.

Foundation by [personal profile] musesfool
600 words. "I like your freckles."

Adorable Tony/Pepper UST.

If On a Winter's Night a Fangirl by [ profile] trinityofone Rec+
12,300 words. "Chuck," Becky said, slowly and carefully and very, very seriously. "I think someone is trying to communicate with us through the fanfic."

Wow. *flails* This is seriously like one of the best things I've ever read. It's hilarious and meta (not just meta in the whole Becky and Chuck way but about fandom and the internet in general) and so, so good. XD I love Becky here. Even if you cringed at her on the show, she is awesome here. The first half of the story was funny, but it's not til the big reveal that things really get going. I want to quote so many things, so many spoilery things! This is best read unspoiled, though. Seriously! (Or should I say srsly? LOL)

Spoilers!! )

Original Fic

Define Me with a Knife by [personal profile] eisen Rec+
7100 words. Teenage girls are petty creatures. And I'm definitely including myself in that statement.

This is very awesome. It reads just like a shounen manga, to the degree that I was actually envisioning page layouts as I was reading it. It's a harsh post-apocalyptic world filled with odd creatures and a dwindling band of teenagers, including the narrator, who died and was brought back by a creature called Gev in exchange for her eye. It's really well-written and sucks you right in.

All These Things That I've Done by [ profile] makesmewannadie 5/5 Recommended
7000 words. Somebody told me/ You had a boyfriend/ That looked like a girlfriend/ That I had in February of last year.

This was written for me! And it was a total surprise! I love MMWD's writing, but she doesn't write much, and sometimes what she does write is fandoms I don't care about, but this! This is totally My Thing. This is my bag, baby.

I'm not sure what to categorise it as...original fic? Fanfic? It's kind of The Killers fanfic, but not fanfic about The Killers. It's a story based loosely on Hot Fuss (she links to the lyrics if you're not familiar with the album, but the story totally stands alone). If you like The Killers, you should totally read this. If you like well-written stories, you should totally read this. If you like fic about transpeople, you should totally read this. This is one of those stories that is really great, but has like, no built-in audience, so go! Go, go, go!

More! )

Anyway, I really, really hope people go read this, because it totally deserves a bigger audience.

I went through the fics submitted for my Imperfect Sex challenge and read the ones in fandoms I knew (which actually turned out to be most of them). It was a pretty mixed bag, but there was some good stuff, and even the ones that had problems or I didn't like still had interesting ideas.

Wake by [ profile] cesperanza 2/5
SGA, pairing withheld for spoilers. 3400 words. Interesting and in many ways so much my thing, but had one thing that kept me from really liking it. )

Worst Second Base Ever by [ profile] shrieking_ell 3/5
John, Rodney, Teyla gen. 800 words. Rodney tells about his worst time having sex. Funny stuff. )

In the Morning by [ profile] helena_s_renn 1/5
Viggo/Bean. 2200 words. Props for the subject matter, but the less said about the writing, the better. )

Spur of the Moment by [ profile] brigantine1 2/5
Viggo/Bean. 300 words. This was so close to being a 3. I like the idea a *lot*, but the writing needs work. )

Full of Grace by [ profile] nixwilliams 2/5
Supernatural RPS. 700 words. Funny, but tell-y. )

Smooth Operator by [ profile] zillah975 4/5 Recommended
SPN, Dean/Jo. 2700 words. Hilarious. )

It Ain't Hay by [ profile] witchqueen 3/5
Original f/f. 1000 words. A perfect fit for the challenge. )

Still no more smutmas reviews, because I'm in the middle of reading one of those really long ones, but people on my flist and elsewhere keep posting short fics that I get distracted by (hey, that sounds a lot like my writing style, too... *headdesk*).

Four Things from Earth That John Sheppard Misses by [ profile] siegeofangels 3/5
John. 500 words. I can definitely see this. )

Until the Stars Are All Alight by [ profile] reccea 2/5
John/Rodney. 1900 words. Interesting idea, but don't think too hard about it. )

Unto the Day by [ profile] telesilla 4/5 Recommended

This was meant to be a Christmas present, but I am a slacker, and didn't even get it done in time to be a Boxing Day present. Instead it's a couple-days-after-Christmas-but-too-early-to-pretend-it's-New-Year's present. Unfortunately, there weren't that many fics that I hadn't already commented on, and of those few, several were in fandoms I'm completely unfamiliar with. So here are the ones I could read. Merry Christmas, [ profile] makesmewannadie! :D

Diet/Junk Food 3/5
500 words. Diet did not want Junk Food.
Qualitative/Quantitative 3/5
200 words. "How do I love thee?" quoth Qualitative, "Let me count the ways."
Theory/Practice 3/5
200 words. Theory yearned for Practice.
Wrong/Wrong 3/5
200 words. Wrong and Wrong were drawn to one another.

These are anthropomorfics; if you can't tell by the titles, they're anthropomorphised concepts/things. I was going to write something separate for each of these, but they're so short, it's hard to figure out something substantive to say. They're all hilarious, though, and the Diet/Junk Food one is so appropriate for the Christmas season, especially considering I just uttered (or typed, rather) the words, "This See's candy is so tempting. I should just eat the last few pieces and remove the temptation." And now I have.

A Little Smackerel of Something 3/5
400 words. Piglet pops 'round to Pooh's for Tea.

Winnie the Pooh/Piglet. Yes, you read that right. This is both hilarious and mimics the tone of the original perfectly, no mean feat for Winnie the Pooh sex.

You Get What You Need 3/5
4200 words. X-Men, Rogue/Iceman. Marie and Bobby, directly after the events of X2.
Interesting premise. I liked it. )

Oh, and speaking of stories about fucked up people, Ruth pointed me towards this very cool-sounding new book by [ profile] 3jane, Stolen. Sadly the library here doesn't have it and no one is selling it used, so I may have to break down and buy it even though it's $10. I've never read any fic by [ profile] 3jane (though I did read her journal for a while when she was teaching English in Korea as her annecdotes were hilarious), so I've no idea as to her writing style, but the review sounds very promising and makes it sound like (both style and subject-wise) something I would like a lot.
