Whoops. Been so busy with Irene here that I haven't had much time on the internet and didn't manage to get my reading post done on Wednesday or even on Thursday! Still, I had a lot to talk about this week and by next week will surely have forgotten, so I'd better do it now while I have a chance. :D

What are you currently reading?
Currently back to reading manga only, I guess? I'm about halfway through two different volumes, 7 Seeds 24 and Aozora Yell 11. Aozora Yell is one that I bought several months ago and it's just been sitting on my desk because I always go for my iphone instead of physical books. But since I'm not doing a book club book this round, I thought I would try and read some physical books (both prose and manga) that I have sitting around, as I really like the idea of using the book club to read non-ebooks.

I forgot how much I love Aozora Yell. How could I have forgotten? It's just so, so, so cute. (If you're not familiar with the series, you may be familiar with the author from her other series, High School Debut, which actually did get an official English release. All her stuff is the same sweet/heartwarming kind of thing.) This volume starts Tsubasa's second year, so there are a bunch of new characters introduced as new first-years join the brass band.

Meanwhile in 7 Seeds, things continue to get more and more exciting. Really, I am just absolutely blown away by the most recent turn of events. How does Tamura-sensei manage to keep coming up with these awesome ideas?

What did you recently finish reading?
Well, on Sunday I finished Go by Kaneshiro Kazuki, exactly on the last day of that book club round, so perfect timing. :) Here's my book club questions for the end of the round:

1. Are you glad you've finally read this book? Would you read more books in this genre or by this author as a result? Would you recommend this book to others?

Very glad I finally read it! Like I said in my initial post, I watched the movie over ten years ago and bought the book soon after and it's just been sitting here ever since. XD Plus it's very good timing since I'm heading to Book Off next week and taking some stuff to sell and I can include this with my manga and CDs.

I don't think the author has really written a whole lot else, and the genre is just...modern fiction/literary fiction, I guess. Which is what I mostly read in Japanese anyway. I would recommend it to anyone who can read Japanese! It's both an interesting story and a good look at what it's like to be an ethnic minority in Japan.

2. What's your favourite quote or scene from the book? Alternatively, which is your least favourite, or the one that made you think the most, or the one that made you lose all patience with the book?
I don't really tend to think of books in terms of favorite scenes and least favorite scenes.

3. How did you enjoy reading to a deadline? Were you strict with yourself? Did you have a schedule? Was the book too long or too short for the time frame of the challenge?

This book was really the perfect length (a bit under 250 pages). If I were reading an ebook, I could do with something longer, but since this was a physical book, it meant that my two main reading times (in bed before going to sleep and on my lunch breaks at work) were times I was reading something other than the book club book. (I don't want to lug a physical book to work and I don't have a bedside lamp, so the only reading I can do is with something that has its own light like my phone.) By reading about twenty pages a day, I was able to keep on track while still being able to miss a day or two if I didn't have time to get to my reading. I didn't really have a set schedule, just tried to keep to about that number of pages each time.

In addition to my book club book, I also finally finished the fic I was reading for what felt like forever!

Summary: 1955. Under the placid veneer of suburban playparks and middle-class conformity churns a hidden London: femmes and butches dancing close in basement bars; clandestine love between women. To Sherlock Holmes, struggling private detective and mistress of disguise, it’s a realm she renounced years before. To Johnnie Watson, daredevil ambulance driver turned auto mechanic, it’s become a little too familiar. But when someone is murdered in the washroom of the city’s most notorious lesbian club, the investigation will lead both women to reconsider their assumptions about themselves, each other, and the world in which they live.

This was really good! I've not read anything this long in years and the length was definitely daunting, but I'm glad I gave it a chance. I definitely found Sherlock more likable as a woman (I'm sure that male!Sherlock is often written in a more likable way in fic than he is on the show, but here it was more that I didn't find the arrogance as off-putting in a female character vs a male character).

What do you think you'll read next?
I just realised I hadn't downloaded this week's Jump, so that for sure! But also in addition to Aozora Yell, I'd like to read at least one other volume of physical manga that I have here on my desk, maybe either Tegami Bachi 15 or Tera Girl 2. Also I would like to read one of the non-manga books on my shelf, something short that I can finish in the two weeks of the book club round, so that I'm ready to start fresh with a new book when the round I'm sitting out ends. A likely candidate is All I Asking for Is My Body by Milton Murayama, since it's only about a hundred pages long.

So, I've decided I'm no longer going to post reviews about every fic I read. The completionist in me wants to keep doing it, but knowing that I have to think up something to say no matter how little there is to say about something is one of the things keeping me from reading more fic. I'm still going to post recs for stuff I really liked and want to gush about, and I'll probably occasionally post about fics that I didn't like as well, but the vast majority of stuff I read falls in the middle. It's okay, I enjoyed it well enough, or maybe I didn't, but it's not bad in a way that makes an interesting review.

Anyway, hopefully this will mean more rec posts from me?

I have still only just barely started poking around at Yuletide (man, I wish there was an easy way to get from the main collection to Madness fics), but have some recs for fics I read in the past couple days and really liked.

Yeah, just from the summary you know this isn't going to be your usual cheery Pushing Daisies fic. It's not quite what I would have liked it to be, but it's pretty cool and I really like the way Ned's powers were put to use (and the desert scene was awesome).

First off, here's a couple non-Yuletide fics in these two fandoms that I read a while back and never got around to posting:

And now for Yuletide. I really had high hopes for these fandoms, especially Gravity Falls, since a lot of people requested it, but there were only a handful of fics. :(

Man, I have really not been reading fic much at all these days, but I do read something here and there and have collected some reviews. They mostly kind of suck as reviews, as I can't seem to think of much to say, especially when it's something I read a while back and made the mistake of not reviewing at the time (because I didn't have the energy) and now I've forgotten what it was about. >_<

I like the idea of keeping a record of everything I read, but feeling like I have to review after everything I read has made me avoid reading, I think (though that's not the only reason I haven't been reading fic; a large part of it is just that I have just been reading books or manga instead). Meh. :-/

This was really funny. I love how the lack of punctuation in dialogue makes it read more like the comics. I was head-scratchy about George randomly being a dude. Someone in comments assumed that it was the author deliberately adding a bizarre twist, which could be the case, but my first reaction was "wtf have you never actually read Nancy Drew?" So idk. XD Regardless, the story is hilarious and I love Beaton's Nancy so much.

I loved the addition of the "aw yiss" duck and St. Francis (I never read headers, so I didn't even know they'd be in it until they appeared, so it was a fun surprise). I'm not too interested in Mystery Solving Teens at the moment and was mainly reading this for Nancy, who was funny when she appeared (especially her confession! I was lazy and used the AO3 rec formatting, which I don't particularly like and also makes every entry way long (also I quoted a lot!), so they're going behind a cut. So far I've really only read by recs, so these have probably been mentioned quite a bit already, but whatevs. I enjoyed them!

20th Century Boys
21st Century Girls by [personal profile] springgreen
9400 words. Because girl groups, childhood games, henshin pens, secret passwords, and shoujo manga can save the world. "There was something about the pen encircled by the ring, something that reminded her of summer days trying to keep her red bean popsicle from dripping over the manga she was reading, of lurking in the air-conditioned apartment and spying on the adults for reasons she had long since forgotten."

I was expecting to like this more than I did. I did like it, but I think the fact that it mirrored canon (which is what many of the commenters loved about it) is what made it not work as well for me, because I kept comparing it to canon, and it was lacking all the things that made the original so awesome for me. [personal profile] springgreen focuses on the nostalgia and childhood friends grown apart part of 20th Century Boys, which I certainly enjoyed, but the thing that made me all zomgwowbestmangaevar! was all the other stuff, which this only uses as background. And if it were a different type of story (there are plenty of other stories I'd love to see in this universe), that would not be a problem, but I kept feeling like, well, if it's going to be a female version of 20th Century Boys, then I want all the other stuff, too, and of course that would be a massive project that I wouldn't expect anyone to actually undertake, so there's just no way it could be what I found myself wanting. Also I might have liked it better if I hadn't read it right after reading the manga and having that fresh in my mind, idk. Anyway, I did enjoy it, and I'd recommend it to people who aren't me! It's well written and I don't think you really need to know canon to read it. (Also probably helps if you yourself share the nostalgia for the type of childhood she's writing about, which I don't. It's both past my time and I didn't play the way same way.)

The Avengers
Semaphore by [personal profile] devildoll Rec
39,000. Steve/Tony. "I'm trying to like you, Tony. You're just making it very hard."

I'm not terribly interested in this pairing, but I have really loved some other stuff by this author, so when I saw it mentioned on my flist, I decided to give it a chance. I was dubious at first because it involved breaking up Tony and Pepper for Tony and Steve, and I ship Tony/Pepper so hard I'd honestly rather they were not together at all than to break them up, but it was done well and I ended up really enjoying the story a lot.

Kimi ni Todoke
Meeting Halfway by [archiveofourown.org profile] highboys Rec
7300 words. Chizuru has a lot of secrets of her own. Most of it is about Ayane.

This is really sweet, just like the manga. And also angsty, in a way the manga really isn't quite, but in a way that still felt right for these characters (and I love angst, so). I really enjoyed it a lot.

Mulan
The Revised Ballad by SaltwaterGarden Rec
2700 words. The legend says that there was a girl whose name was Mu Lan, who disguised herself as a man, but his name is Zhou, and he took off the last disguise he ever wore when he cut his hair and bound his chest.

I found this totally by chance when updating the transfic master list (I actually followed a link to another of this author's fics and then found this one as well), and decided to read it since it was short. I'm only familiar with Mulan through cultural osmosis, but you don't really need any knowledge of the canon to read this.

Community/Huge

Intro to Public Relations by [personal profile] happydork
3000 words. G. "Troy, Abed," Jeff said. "This is Becca. Larry plays LERP with her. She's a warrior princess."

I don't know why I didn't like this as much as I thought I would (or as much as other people liked it). It was cute, and Troy and Abed felt spot on, but Becca felt kind of flat, idk. And I kind of felt like there was no point to it other than the author liked these characters and wanted to see them together? Which I guess is the point of a lot of crossovers, but I'm not really a crossover person, so maybe it's just Not For Me. I was pleased that Athena (who only had a tiny bit part) was trans, though.

Harry Potter

Eleven Up by [livejournal.com profile] bookelfe Rec
7400 words. In 1990, prominent Muggleborn research wizard Cromwell Albertson embarked on an ambitious project. Inspired by Muggle Michael Apted’s “Seven Up!” documentary series, he chose six students from controversial headmaster Albus Dumbledore’s list of Muggle-borns to be admitted to Hogwarts in 1991 and 1992 and went to their homes to interview them – before and after their life-changing discovery of their wizarding talent. He continued these interviews over the next nine years, a period of time which spanned both the Chamber of Secrets attacks in 1992 and Voldemort’s second rise and subsequent persecution of Muggleborns in 1997. The Pensieve Projection that resulted won a Superbius award for artistic excellence in 2002 and has been required viewing in the Hogwarts Muggle Studies course since 2008.

This is a neat concept and while there are a few jarring Americanisms, I really enjoyed it.

Sucker Punch (The Matriarch Mashup) by [livejournal.com profile] lunabee34 Rec+
3200 words. Hermione/Ron/Draco. Sequel to Five Times Hermione Granger Punched Draco Malfoy, Five Times Draco Malfoy Took It in the Face from One H. Granger, and Fist Meets Face (The Ron Weasley Remix).

This is less of a review and more of a "hey, there's more of this awesome series, go read it!" announcement, as I find it difficult to review fics in series. This one focuses on their respective mothers and how they're taking this unlikely turn of events.

Iron Man

Thermocouple Junction by [personal profile] feverbeats
2500 words. Five times Tony Stark came out.

More like one time Tony came out as trans and four times he told people he'd been assigned female at birth. I don't really like the term "coming out" for disclosing trans status once you've transitioned, because that equates living as your real gender with being in the closet. But terminology aside, I enjoyed this.

Ugly Betty

Ugly Betty Season Five: New York, New York by [livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63 Rec+
Series. Takes off from canon during the show's penultimate episode, "The Past Presents The Future." Betty is about to leave New York for an exciting new life in London ... but fate has other plans. To Daniel's surprise, so does he.

This is the first "virtual season" of a show I've ever read, though I know it's a fairly common thing. Mainly I don't read gen that much, so I'm not as interested in it for other shows, but for Ugly Betty it's perfect. I had already read and loved one post-canon UB fic by this author, so when I happened across this virtual season five, I knew I had to read it. It is everything I could hope for in an Ugly Betty fic and really feels like it could actually be canon. All the wacky soap opera plot twists are here and so well done. One thing I really like about this series is that the whole season is not "will they or won't they?" Instead, once they realise they have feelings for each other, the problem is finding time to actually be together (and even that doesn't last the whole "season"). I love that Alexis is brought back, and also YOGA. My favorite minor character. And Yoga/Claire is strongly hinted at here, hopefully it will be more than hinted at by the end of the series.

Yes, that's the one drawback. This is still a WiP. There are currently twelve fics, over 150,000 words total, but it's not done (I'm guessing the author means it to be a twenty-ish episode season, as the show was). While the fics were originally being posted on an almost weekly basis, the last one was posted June 8th and the author seems to have discovered X-Men: First Class in the meantime, so I hope that doesn't mean they'll drop this. D: *crosses fingers* Anyway, I highly recommend it as-is, even if it never does get finished. But I have used the AO3 subscribe function (first time using it!), so I'll be notified when/if more is posted. (I hope eventually we'll be able to modify subscriptions so we can subscribe to just one fandom from an author, or one series/fic/tag/etc.)

Harry Potter

Souvenirs and Lost Luggage by [profile] girl_tarte Rec
5900 words. PG. In 2003, Petunia leaves Little Whinging for good. It is four years before she can talk about it.

The Dursleys are so over the top in canon, they really don't fit with the rest of the story. It's like for those sections, she's telling a fairytale, but for the rest it's a more realistic story. It's not just that the Dursleys are bad people, but they're bad people in a way that is ver cartoon-y, so I really like fics that try to humanise them. Not erase all their flaws and make them perfect, but make them more realistic. This does a really great job of that with Petunia.

Dudley Dursley and the Elusive Difference by [livejournal.com profile] kahvi Rec
4800 words. R. Dudley is intersex, outwardly appearing male. Vernon and Petunia choose to keep this fact from everyone. Even Dudley.

Another one that doesn't make the Dursleys less horrible, just makes them more human. I liked this a lot, and I especially like that things aren't wrapped up all neat and tidy at the end. (And I'm always amazed at fics (especially this long!) that manage to avoid using pronouns altogether and still feel natural.)

Unity by [livejournal.com profile] notalwaysweak Rec
4400 words. Teen. Scorpius feels more at home in his Animagus form than in human form. Al likes boys instead of girls. And Rosie's more in love with knowledge than with people. Sometimes people don't fit into the places expected of them.

Having a boy/boy/girl friend trio feels kind of like trying to do Harry/Ron/Hermione all over again, but I do like these three together, and aside from Rose being The Smart One who helps the two boys with their studies, their personalities are different enough that it doesn't feel like a clone of H/R/H. This has a bit of Al/Scorpius, but mostly it's a friendship story touching on various issues of growing up. I enjoyed it.

Sherlock Holmes

Intemperance by [personal profile] basingstoke Rec+
17,800. Mature. "Intemperance," a story from the secret journals of Doctor John H. Watson, intimate friend and long-time companion of the infamous Sherlock Holmes: A most curious and instructive report of the great man's improbable fecundation, gestation, and parturition.

The fic already has well over a hundred comments, so I'm sure most people who might be interested have already read it, but I will rec it all the same! I clicked on it because I am interested in Holmes transfic, and it was excellent in that regard (I really love how everything was handled), but my absolute favorite part was Mary. How so awesome? This Watson is prudish and easily shocked and Mary is just the opposite (omg the ending, ha; I love the idea of Mary going off and having adventures with Holmes, too). This is such a great mesh of books and movie, too. It's not Holmes/Watson, but Holmes is queer and while John is straighty mcstraighterson with eyes only for Mary, the story is from his oblivious POV, so there is certainly room to see Holmes as having a thing for Watson (and I can't see movie!Holmes not). Anyway, I highly recommend this to anyone with the slightest Holmes knowledge. It's a really great story.

Fall Out Boy

There May Not Be Another Way to Your Heart by [personal profile] octette Rec+
2500 words. Teen. Pete is a trans guy, and that's not the point of the story.

What it says on the tin. This is about Pete and Ashlee breaking up, sort of, but mostly just about Pete trying to get through the day, as fucked up as he is. And he's trans. But that's not the point of anything. It is an awesome story and I love it so. (And I don't think you really need to know anything about Fall Out Boy to read it, either.)

Harry Potter

Black Coffee on a Lonely Night by [livejournal.com profile] femmequixotic Rec
21,600 words. NC-17. Draco owns a café in the city. Harry's an MP who comes in every morning, newspapers in one hand, BlackBerry in the other, and orders a triple espresso macchiato.

I don't think I've ever read a non-magical HP AU, not because I'm necessarily opposed (I do love AUs), but they just don't seem that common. I liked the jobs she came up for with everyone, though idk how well the weird Harry Potter names fit in the real world, so that threw me off a little. Anyway, this was fun and I enjoyed it. Also big yay for Draco actually loving his wife and being bisexual. (Boo for badly-written kids, but at least Scorpius isn't on screen much.)

Being the Cool Uncle by [personal profile] melannen
1400 words. G. Uncle Charlie was great with patching up scrapes and getting back on a broomstick. Romance, he had less experience with.

This is cute. I had to look up the niece in question on the Lexicon (she's George and Angelina's daughter, if you're wondering, too), but it's nice to see fic about other Next Gen kids besides Harry and Ginny's (and sometimes Ron and Hermione's).

Iron Man

6900 words. G. An origin story where Tony Stark is a Vietnamese-American person. "It's because baguettes and fried eggs remind him of being poor," his mom said, "and Ba only wants to be rich."

I liked this a lot. I felt like I was missing some of the references, having only watched the Iron Man movie and not knowing the comics, but not so much that it distracted from my enjoyment.

Stargate: Atlantis

Something in a Sunday by [personal profile] busaikko Rec+
3600 words. Explicit. John/OMC. After Enemy at the Gate, John has bad luck with a dating agency. Also, Rodney has issues.

I love this so, so much. In so much John/Rodney fic (including my own, I fully admit!) he's really toned down from canon, but this abrasive, obnoxious Rodney is just how I imagine canon!Rodney would be in this situation. I miss Ronon and Teyla here (especially Ronon), and am not sure why they weren't included, but even that can't dull my love for this fic.

So, when I asked what I should post for 3W4DW, a couple people said fic reviews, and I haven't really been reading a lot of fic lately, but there is what I have read!

Babysitters Club

Accordingly Adorned (The BFF Remix) by [personal profile] velvetmouse Rec+
1300 words. G. Stacey & Claudia. Good fashion sense is gender-neutral. So is friendship.

OMG this is perfect! It's a remix of a fic that was written for me for Yuletide, so it feels like an extra remix present! I'm so thrilled to see more of Claude (or any trans!Claudia).

Full House

Round the Corner Straight by [personal profile] busaikko Rec+
1100 words. Michelle. The first two years, Glen doesn't want to see his family at all, not even cousins or people related by marriage. Joey jokes that he called in his debts, making his voice all Godfather-y, but Glen's pretty sure he actually had to go and explain things to Dad, and that there was a whole bunch of trouble involved.

I...did not know I needed Full House fic about Michelle being trans? (I mean, it actually took me a minute to remember which one Michelle was; at first I got Michelle and Stephanie confused.) But apparently I did, because this is awesome. It makes me want to watch Full House again (I loved it when it was running, but haven't watched it in years and years), but I know that Full House wouldn't be this Full House, so I guess really I just want more of this universe? XD

Harry Potter

Freaks, Geeks and Post-War Resolutions by [insanejournal.com profile] kaycee
3000 words. PG. Dudley feels out of place at Harry's party until a sweet girl asks him to dance.

I liked the idea of this a lot, but not so much the execution. Very tell, not show. Still, it's cute enough.

Hikaru no Go

Daylight (The Quiet Understanding Remix) by [archiveofourown.org profile] hostilecrayon
200 words. G. Touya/Hikaru. Touya doesn't know, but he understands.

This is a POV shift of my one and only Hikaru no Go drabble. It works really well as a companion piece (and also stands alone, which is always a plus in a remix, IMO).

RPF

Nothing to Say but It's Okay by [personal profile] cesare Rec
500 words. Teen. Jude Law/Ewan McGregor. The man who wriggles out of the linens is every bit as wrecked as the room.

Ces was asking for prompts and I asked for sleepy morning-after-the-first-time sex with either Jude/Ewan, Dom/Elijah, or John/Ronon, and she chose Jude/Ewan, yay! :D It's more funny and cute than porny, which is just fine with me. ♥

Stargate: Atlantis

Ganymede's New Groove (The Erastes Expansion) by [personal profile] sabinetzin Rec
3900 words. Explicit. John/Rodney. It's hard to believe he's twice Rodney's age.

This is an expansion of a drabble I wrote a couple years back for the McShep Match drabble tree. I really like what the remixer did with it. I think I had a more predatory John in mind, whereas this John is just sort of sad (especially in the second and third chapters), but I like that reading a lot. It certainly works with John's character. And I like snarky, jaded teenage Rodney.

Strange Bedfellows by [livejournal.com profile] casspeach Rec+
35,000 words. NC-17. Neville/Draco. 'Misery acquaints a man with strange bedfellows' – Shakespeare The Tempest

So having just finished rereading the books, I was looking for longer, canon-compliant post-canon fic to read and this turned out to be perfect. It is set before the epilogue and not totally epilogue-compliant, but that's fine with me. I just wanted something that was working from all of canon, which this is. And I was specifically hoping for post-Hogwarts-getting-jobs sort of fic, which this also is. Neville works at the Ministry and Draco is his new assistant. Anyway! I've never read this pairing before, but it really works. I love both Neville and Draco here. I love how awkward they are initially with each other.

Fatal Fascination by [livejournal.com profile] grey_hunter
27,000 words. NC-17. Harry/Draco. Those who have followed the last couple of months' news might be acquainted with the astonishing story of Camélia Malfoy's mysterious death. Her husband and his family were prime suspects in the murder. Our readers were informed that after local Aurors investigation turned up nothing, the case was handed over to Auror Headquarters, with Harry Potter himself leading the investigation. Many of our readers are still reluctant to believe the outcome, especially after Harry Potter – whose domestic life is whispered to be turbulent these days – handed in his resignation to the Ministry two months later and has refused interviews ever since. Will the true story behind the scandal that had the wizarding world in upheaval for the last few months ever be revealed?

This was enjoyable, but I didn't find the ending satisfying. The thing with the children of Death Eaters being attacked was played up a lot and then never went anywhere, and the author said in comments that they didn't feel that thread needed to be tied up, but to me it was the most interesting thread, so I felt annoyed that it was just left hanging. Also, all the characterisations felt a little wonky to me (especially Scorpius, who was sometimes written as if he were much younger than twelve (food flying into his mouth? That's seems appropriate for babies or very small children, not pre-teens...)) and I didn't really buy the romance. But I still liked it overall.

Own Two Legs by [livejournal.com profile] sparks_of_chaos
30,000 words. NC-17. Harry/Draco. Suddenly, he wants nothing more than to absorb her persistent ability to put one foot in front of the other and move forward. Not look back. He wants to be able, like her, to live.

This took me what felt like ages to read. It's about the same length as the two above, each of which I read in a single sitting, yet this one I'd read a chapter or two and let it sit for days in between, and I really had to force myself to finish. I thought of dropping it several times, but wanted to try and see it through. I can't really say why I didn't like it. The writing's not bad, but it just didn't grab me.

1000 words. Teen. This is either a meditation on the social construction of the female body, or else the one where Alistair feels up Chloe's breast. (Don't worry, she isn't wearing it at the time.)

Oh, I really liked this a lot. It's future fic, in which Chloe and Alistair (now Alyssa) have a heart-to-heart after Chloe has lost both breasts to cancer. It's just such a great little slice of life fic.

Inception

Weltschmerz by [livejournal.com profile] cobweb_diamond
14,600 words. Mature. How to come to terms with the unsatisfactory nature of physical reality.

I'm not really that interested in Inception fic in general or Arthur/Eames in particular, but I had heard good things about this one where Arthur is trans, so I figured now that I'd seen the movie I'd check it out. Like the movie, it was enjoyable enough, but I wasn't really wowed. One thing I really liked was Arthur not being able to make himself a functioning cismale cock in dreams, because he doesn't have the first-hand knowledge of what it feels like. That would definitely trip me up. For any change, really, unless it was something I'd once experienced myself.

Kid by anon Rec+
1100 words. The guy always called John kid. John remembers this really clearly. Hey, kid the guy had said. That's a great skateboard, even though it was a crappy banana board, bought used. You like skating? the guy asked, and so on until he got to Skating's expensive, isn't it? and How would you like to earn a little extra money?

Wow, this is really good. The prompt is "John/any male characters, gangbang, first time. John hopes no one ever asks him how he lost his virginity, because no one would believe him" and it's not written in a porny way, but rather John thinking about how much it fucked him up (though it is definitely explicit). I really, really liked it.

Man, after looking through the Scott Pilgrim fics, I really wish I'd written that Kim/Knives fic I wanted to as a Treat, because somehow no one (on the archive at all, not even just Yuletide!) has written it and I don't understand how because they canonically made out! Why is there no awkward post-canon hooking up!? Does it exist elsewhere and someone can point me to it? Do I need to write this myself?

Anyway, here are some Yuletide and one non-Yuletide fics I read.

Scott Pilgrim & the Unsubtle Seduction by [archiveofourown.org profile] afterism Rec+
2500 words. Teen. Wallace doesn’t have an agenda (except, maybe, snuggling).

Oh, this is much better. Same premise(ish), but really has the voices down well and is just generally adorkable and sweet. For example:
There’s a brief time when Scott’s mom misreads the situation entirely and tries to set Wallace up with Stacey. It ends with Wallace stealing Stacey’s boyfriend, and Stacey not talking to any of them for a while, and then she catches them curled up together on the couch, Scott asleep with his head on Wallace’s shoulder and Wallace is dozing until he glances up and spots her smirking at them from the stairs.

“So... you and my brother?” she says quietly, after he’s carefully untangled himself from Scott’s grip and joined her on the steps.

Wallace shrugs. “It’s a slow, subtle seduction. I’m wooing him.”

“There’s nothing subtle about you, Wallace. Or Scott, actually. Good luck with that.”

Scott stirs with a hushed, incoherent mumble and they both pause, watching him as he flops forward and spreads out over the couch, one arm dangling off the edge. He instantly falls back asleep.

A few moments pass in silence and then Stacey says, “So how is that going, anyway?”

“It’s a work in progress.”

10,000 words. Mature. Stephen is dating Julie, until he isn't anymore.

Oh, oh, OH, this is so perfect! When I was reading Scott Pilgrim, I thought damn, Stephen and Joseph are pretty slashy! but even though there were other queer characters, I didn't really expect these two to actually get together. And then they were! And we didn't get to see any of the how because it's all Scott's narrow, self-centered POV, and he is totally oblivious until the very end. This is exactly the story I wanted about Stephen and Joseph and it fits right into canon like it was meant to be there. She really nailed everyone's voices and the tone of the comic perfectly. (Also I use the word perfect a lot!)
