Summary: Cecil is narrating somebody's life again, only this time his chosen subject had not always wanted to hear about herself on the radio and is less than thrilled by the attention.

I love A Story About You and I really love this take on the idea. It's just so much fun.

A Scout's Guide to Dog Park Survival (1486 words) by wyomingnot
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Welcome to Night Vale
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Dana (Welcome to Night Vale), The Man in the Tan Jacket

Summary: Four ways Night Vale Scouts helped Dana in the dog park and one way it didn't.

Dana as a scout! I really can't get enough of Night Vale scouting.

What do you think you'll read next?

As much as I'd like to jump right into the next volume of Hataraku Maou-sama!, I think I will take a break to read some shorter things. So probably some manga, but idk what. Also there's still more [community profile] fan_byproducts fics to read.
torachan: (Default)
Well, I deliberately saved my weekly reading post for Thursday so that it would be after the [community profile] fan_byproducts reveals and I could post my recs with author names intact, but then I was too tired and never posted, so oops. Now it's Friday.

What are you currently reading?
Bookwise, I'm still reading Hataraku Maou-sama. I'm really enjoying it a lot, but I've hardly been reading much at all, so the progress is slow. I'm about two-thirds of the way done now, so I expect I will still be reading by next week's reading post (though perhaps close to finishing). :p

Ficwise, I'm still going through all the [community profile] fan_byproducts fics. There weren't a ton of fics, but again, slow reading.

What did you recently finish reading?
Mostly Night Vale fics, but also one Attack on Titan?

The Capitol's Punishment (3413 words) by khepria
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Shingeki no Kyojin | Attack on Titan
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings, Graphic Depictions Of Violence, Major Character Death
Characters: Annie Leonhart, Erwin Smith, Hange Zoe, Levi (Shingeki no Kyojin)
Additional Tags: Body Horror, Dismemberment, Execution
Summary: Annie is awake and still breathing. She is alive, but she wouldn't call this living.

Very interesting story about Annie after her capture.

Tamika Flynn: Librarian Hunter (3836 words) by Measured_Words
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Welcome to Night Vale
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Characters: Tamika Flynn, Marcus Vansten
Additional Tags: Librarians, The Night Vale Private Library, Books, Libraries, Hunting, Nudists, Nudity, Teenagers, axes, Privilege, BAMF Tamika
Summary: Marcus Vansten has an unexpected problem at the Night Vale Private Library, but he knows just who to call.

This was so cool! It is pretty much a sequel to [personal profile] thingswithwings's How I Survived My Summer Vacation, by Tamika Flynn, Age 12 3/4, though could be read without that, since it doesn't make any explict references to what actually happened in the library (though I have to assume that if you are interested in reading about Tamika Flynn, you would have read TWW's fic!). Anyway, I really love this idea.

Stars Over Void (1181 words) by Themistoklis
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Welcome to Night Vale
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Tamika Flynn
Summary: On her first day at the station, they tell Tamika that the survival rate for Night Vale Community Radio interns is low.

Another great Tamika fic! In this one she goes on to be an intern at NVCR, which is definitely a future I approve of.

Enter this World (2323 words) by Themistoklis
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Welcome to Night Vale
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: The Angels (Welcome to Night Vale), Old Woman Josie, Cecil (Welcome to Night Vale)
Summary: The angels don't all come here on purpose. Erika's first glimpse of the human world is through the bars of a cage, and she barely manages to make it to Old Woman Josie's for help.

I love the premise! This would be really cool as the start of a longer fic, but it also works very well just on its own. There's so much of Night Vale we only see in glimpses and this fits right in with that.

Also speaking of [community profile] fan_byproducts fics, it turns out my gift fic was written by [personal profile] busaikko! No wonder I liked it so much. :D

What do you think you'll read next?
More Hataraku Maou-sama & more Night Vale fics, it looks like!
torachan: karkat from homestuck looking bored (karkat bored)
1. Day off tomorrow yayyyyyy! I only got like 3.5 hours of sleep last night* so I'm looking forward to sleeping in (of course I didn't go to bed early tonight, though; that would be too sensible).

2. The not getting sleep is 100% my own fault. I procrastinated on my [community profile] fan_byproducts assignment and then when it came down to the wire, not only did I have writer's block, but I also got sick. So I had to ask for an extension and was writing until the very last minute last night. >_< But I did get my story done and now that is over and OMG RELIEF.

3. And speaking of the fest, I got an absolutely wonderful story about Intern Dana!

Investigative Journalism (2586 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Welcome to Night Vale
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Dana (Welcome to Night Vale), Cecil (Welcome to Night Vale), The Man in the Tan Jacket, Station Management
Additional Tags: Night Vale Dog Park
Summary: When Dana found herself trapped in the Dog Park, she was better prepared than any of the other people. She had her backpack crammed full of survival gear, including two clean pairs of socks and a lightweight sleeping bag, and she had a healthy sense of investigative journalism to keep her spirits up.

It's about her time in the Dog Park and it's so great! Just what I wanted. :D

4. I'm looking forward to reading more [community profile] fan_byproducts stories tomorrow!

5. I got two chapters of manga posted before the end of the month and should have the next chapter of A Child's Child done this weekend as well, so I'm feeling pretty good on the scanlating front. :D
torachan: a drawing of harry potter looking sad (emo harry)
What are you currently reading?
A Night Vale fic! So far it's pretty great, but I'll save talking about it until I've finished it, so that'll go on next week's post.

What did you recently finish reading?
A handful of fics in various fandoms.

Dig Here (956 words) by Cesare
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Welcome to Night Vale
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Carlos/Cecil (Welcome to Night Vale)
Characters: Carlos (Welcome to Night Vale), Cecil (Welcome to Night Vale), Steve Carlsberg
Additional Tags: Time Travel, time capsule, re-education, SCIENCE!
Summary: "Dig here," Cecil told him, and Carlos has done stranger things on their dates— to be fair, he's suggested doing stranger things on their dates— so he dug there.

This is just really cute fluff. Cecil gets a tip that there's a time capsule from the future, so they head out to the desert to dig it up.

Ten Clicks (2050 words) by hollimichele
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Sleepy Hollow (TV)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Ichabod Crane, Abbie Mills
Summary: "So you're saying this device is a library, of sorts," Ichabod said, reaching out to prod at one of the keys on Abbie's laptop. "Or an encyclopedia?"

Ichabod gets sucked into wikipedia. Cute!

IDK My BFF Hermione? (19110 words) by lettered
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings, No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter
Characters: Draco Malfoy, Harry Potter, Charlie Weasley, George Weasley, Hermione Granger, Susan Bones, Ron Weasley, Ginny Weasley
Additional Tags: Dirty Talk, Humiliation, Fingerfucking, Oral Sex, Anal Sex
Summary: Draco's a hot mess. Harry's lovin' it (hell yes).

I really liked the narrative style. I don't think I would have clicked on it from the tags and summary if it hadn't had the title it does, because the tags and summary sound pretty boring to me? But I was like "what is up with that title?" and it turned out to be a pretty hilarious fic and I liked it a lot.

I also read a chapter and some of volume three of Oofuri, but wasn't really feeling it. :-/ (Not in a "I'm giving up the series" way, but just didn't seem to be in the mood for baseball manga or perhaps manga in general.)

What do you think you'll read next?
No idea. I still seem to be doing anything but reading most of the time, but I would like to read stuff! Fic and/or manga seems most likely.

Oh, and if anyone has recs for other Sleepy Hollow fic, I'll take them!
torachan: maru the cat giving the side eye (maru side eye)
What are you currently reading?
Nothing! I suppose I should have quickly started something before this post so that I could have something to say here, but I didn't.

What did you recently finish reading?
Well, I finally read something other than Night Vale fic, because I finished all the Night Vale fic on my phone and have not yet gone to find more. Especially since finding more this time requires wading through AO3, since I've run out of recs.

Recs: 3 Night Vale, 1 Shingeki no Kyojin, 1 Homestuck )

I also finally got caught up on Jump! I had like seven issues to read. ^_^;; I'm enjoying Toriyama Akira's new series, Jaco the Galactic Patrolman. It's typical Toriyama humor, and the art is fantastic. Toriyama's art (Dragon Ball in particular) is one of the things that got me into manga and he's still one of my favorite artists.

I'm also liking the current One Piece storyline more now that the focus is shifting away from Luffy's battles to what's going on with Dressrosa.

What do you think you'll read next?
Really not sure. Could be more fic, could be manga. It's unlikely to be a book, though. That much I feel pretty certain about. :p (Though I suppose I should read at least a few more books before the year is up, since I think I've only read two so far, which is an all-time low.)
torachan: arale from dr slump dressed in a penguin suit and smiling (arale penguin)
What are you currently reading?
I am in the middle of a Night Vale fic I'm not enjoying that much but it's short enough that I don't want to just backbutton out of it. :p

What did you recently finish reading?
Surprise, surprise...

The Observer Effect (6110 words) by thingswithwings
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Welcome to Night Vale
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Carlos/Cecil (Welcome to Night Vale)
Characters: Carlos (Welcome to Night Vale), Cecil (Welcome to Night Vale), The Sheriff's Secret Police, Egbert the Sheriff's Secret Policeman
Additional Tags: Coitus Interruptus, Though Eventually Coitus Managed, Paperwork, Voyeurism, Exhibitionism, Exposure, Non-Consensual Surveillance, Kink Negotiation, Humiliation, Sex Permits, Objectively Creepy Levels of Surveillance and Control, But In the Fic It's Just Sort of Fluffy, It's Really a Very Cute and Fluffy Panopticon Police State
Summary: Carlos suspects, deep down, that this is a crucial aspect of the town's strangeness, the way that people and objects change while watching, while being watched; that he could know everything about Night Vale if he could just know this.

This was cute and funny. I loved the Secret Police character.

Ain't Filled with Gentle Things (5905 words) by neveralarch
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Welcome to Night Vale
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Carlos/Cecil (Welcome to Night Vale), Cecil/Steve Carlsberg
Characters: Carlos (Welcome to Night Vale), Cecil (Welcome to Night Vale), Steve Carlsberg
Additional Tags: Polyamory
Summary: A typical PTA meeting in Night Vale. You know, glow cloud possession, picking senior prom decorations, fistfights over grammar, the usual. (Set post ep 27; no spoilers for ep 28.)

Oh, this was absolutely hilarious! I tend to prefer Cecil POV in fic simply because this is a canon with such a strong character voice. But on the other hand, I do like Carlos's outsider POV! Anyway, this is one of my favorite non-Cecil-POV stories. I love how Carlos is getting used to things in Night Vale, like he's just casually experimenting on this pot roast. Which happens to be sentient, but even in his POV there's no sense of "omg wtf a sentient pot roast!?"

Telepathy (2275 words) by Jaxwrites
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Welcome to Night Vale
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Cecil (Welcome to Night Vale), The Man in the Tan Jacket, Intern Dana
Additional Tags: I kind of guessed at the spelling of the cat's name, If you've listened to more than one episode of this show that's about how weird this fic gets, Telepathy, also snakes, I Tried
Summary: Night Vale residents acquire the ability to read minds. Plus, an interview with the cat hovering in the men's bathroom, a new kid-centric addition to the Night Vale Daily Journal, and a message from the Night Vale Society of Confusion.

Another episode-style fic! I really enjoyed this one.

What do you think you'll read next?
Er, more of the above? ^_^;; I feel like these weekly reading posts must be getting terribly boring for anyone who's not into Night Vale. Sorry about that!
torachan: a happy cartoon guy with the text "it's like a blast of happy up my ass" (blast of happy in my ass)
Woke up early today and still have half an hour before I need to leave for work, so I think I'll go ahead and post this (it's so easy to forget on Wednesday nights, since I get home later than usual).

What are you currently reading?
I do not have anything currently open, but in general the answer is "Night Vale fic". (I also have recently downloaded some non-Night Vale fics that sounded really good, too, but I also have a ton of Night Vale ones on my phone and want to whittle those down a bit more before moving on to other things. Especially since I think all the other fics I recently downloaded are pretty long and most of the Night Vale stuff is pretty short.)

What did you recently finish reading?
Er, Night Vale fic.

Five recs! )

What do you think you'll read next?
More Night Vale fic. :) At some point I may have to wade into the archive and search for stuff myself, but so far I've found plenty of recs to go on.
torachan: a cartoon owl with the text "everyone is fond of owls" (everyone is fond of owls)
What are you currently reading?
Not in the middle of anything at the moment.

What did you recently finish reading?
This past week has been very light on reading, but I did read some more fics. I really need to try and write up my thoughts right after I read something, because I have no idea what I felt about them now except that they were cute.

What do you think you'll read next?
More fic, probably!
torachan: jason momoa/ronon smiling (ronon)
What are you currently reading?
Nothing at the moment.

What did you recently finish reading?
After people so kindly left recs, I plunged headfirst into Night Vale fic and read a whole bunch! (Well, a whole bunch for me. It was probably like ten fics or so and they were all quite short, but considering the amount of fic I usually read these days, it certainly seemed like a lot to me.

Here are some of the ones I really liked:

4 Night Vale & one SGA )

What do you think you'll read next?
More Night Vale fic, probably. I downloaded every rec people left, as well as everything a couple people had favorited on pinboard and delicious if they just linked there. So I still have a ton on my phone.
