torachan: a cartoon kitten with a surprised/happy expression (chii)
I saw this on [personal profile] telesilla's tumblr, but since I don't tumblr and don't like the way of doing memes over there where you only answer questions if one of your followers asks, I just decided to bring it here.

1. How many jobs have you had, and which was your favorite?
Technically I have only had four jobs including this current one. Office assistant for a company that made licensed football clothing (a year or two), assistant to the buyers in the non-licensed clothing section of the UCLA student store (a year or two), freelance translator (twelve years or so), and working at a Japanese market (though I have held various positions here over the past five years: cashier, customer service, data entry/office manager, buyer, assistant manager, and now store manager).

My favorite is definitely the job I have now, though I miss working from home and being able to make my own hours as a freelancer!

More questions! )
torachan: ewan mcgregor pulling his glasses down to look over the top (ewan glasses)
I didn't do this meme last year, idk why, probably busy, but also maybe because I wasn't writing anymore. And I'm still not writing anymore, but having several hundred fics on AO3 means that even without producing any new content, I get a steady stream of daily kudos, and based on the fic titles I've been seeing show up in those emails, I think there's probably been a lot of change in my most popular stories. (As I mentioned the other day, The Force Awakens has awakened people's interest in my old Star Wars stories, for one thing.)

Top 20 of 2016 by hits )

Top 20 by kudos )

Well, probably not many actually read this post, but I like having a record like this, especially since I almost never look at my stats page except when doing this meme, so it's a surprise (except for things like the increase in popularity in VC and SW fics, which I could guess by the daily kudos). I should definitely try to remember to do this every year, even if I never write anything new.

If you comment here with the words "I wanna play" I will assign you a number from 15-30 of facts about yourself to post about yourself in your journal.

[personal profile] k_a_webb gave me the number 25.

These are really random )

Based on the oddness of one of the questions I think I've done this meme years ago, but let's do it again!

House questions )

torachan: a drawing of harry potter looking sad (emo harry)
Well, I haven't written any fic in almost two years, but this meme I've seen floating around today sounded like fun.

I currently have 244 works on AO3. Pick a number between 1 (most recent) and 244 (oldest) and I'll tell you what I like about it.
torachan: tavros from homestuck dressed as pupa pan (pupa pan)
If you want a letter, just ask!

I got O from [personal profile] chagrined, which turned out to be rather difficult... D: Actually I think any letter would have been difficult, because when faced with the questions I completely forgot anything and everything that started with the letter O and just sat here scratching my head for ages. (In fact, I started writing this up a week ago and stalled out because I couldn't think of things that started with O!)

Something I hate: Hmm...okra? I feel this is kind of cheating because I think I've only had it once, in jambalaya, but I didn't really like it and I can't think of anything else beginning with O!

Something I love: (Spam) omusubi! We sell ones at work with teriyaki sauce that are particularly delicious, but when I make them at home it's usually just flavored with a bit of soy sauce while frying the spam. They're best when they're fresh, warm rice and hot crispy spam. And the best nori to use is the Korean kind because it's extra salty.

Somewhere I've been: Orange County! Wow, it took me way too long to think of any places starting with O that I'd been to. Orange County is south of here and contains things like Disneyland, so I've been there for that. I also used to have some friends that lived down there, so even though it was kind of far I'd go down and hang out back when we had a car. Most recently I went when we had to go for work to help out with the remodelling of the Costa Mesa store.

Somewhere I'd like to go: Ooh...Osaka? Oregon? Orlando, Florida? I can't think of anywhere I'm really like omg I really, really want to go, but if I manage to get over to Japan again, I've got friends in Osaka, so I'd like to try and make it there. And I've never been further north on the west coast than San Francisco, so I'd like to go to Oregon at some point, maybe a road trip. And while I've been to Disneyland more times than I can count, I've never been to Disney World, so I wouldn't mind going there at some point, though that seems the least likely of the three.

Someone I know: Uh...hmm. Well, one of my favorite coworkers' last name is Otani.

A film I like: Well, thank God for Wikipedia's list of movies beginning with O, because as expected, I could not think of a single movie, much less one I actually liked. Even after reading through the list, I only saw a handful of movies I'd ever seen! But when getting towards the end, I saw one! Overboard, with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. I haven't seen it in years and years, but I loved it back in the day and watched it a ton of times with my mom.

A book I like: I could cheat and use a manga title (One Piece! Ore Monogatari! Ohana Holoholo!), but in looking through LibraryThing, I actually found a book starting with O that I've read and liked! Over Sea, Under Stone, the first book in the Dark Is Rising series. I know a lot of people don't like this book as much as others in the series, I but I actually like it a lot.
torachan: charlotte from bad machinery saying "oh the mysteries of the moth farm" (oh the mysteries of the moth farm)
Well, it's about a month late because I saw other people on my flist doing it and put it on my to-do list and then just didn't do it. :p But even though I haven't written hardly anything in the time since I last did the meme, I really can't resist taking a look at the stats. I'm curious to see what's changed. (I know just from the kudos emails that I get that there's been an uptick in interest in Vampire Chronicles fic this past year, but I don't know that it's so much as to get any of those fics into even the top twenty.)

Here are the previous years' stats:

2011 )

2012 )

2013 )

And 2014 )

Not to much movement compared to last year's top ten )

And now, like last year and the year before, I want to look at the full top twenty, because there's a lot more movement between 11 and 20 and that's more fun for me to see than just "oh yeah, these fics that were popular last year got some more hits".

2012 )

2013 )

2014 )

I will dub this year the year that people discovered the dubcon Peter Pan shota )

Still none of those VC fics in the top twenty, but they're getting close! I wouldn't be surprised to see at least one or two there next year (there are four between 21 and 30).
torachan: arale from dr slump with a huge grin on her face (arale)
Oh man, these question memes! I'm always really excited about getting questions and then for some reason stress out about them once I get them and half the time I end up letting them sit for so long I just give up and delete the questions. *hangs head*

But when I got these questions from [personal profile] nintendoh I promised I really would answer them, and yeah, it's been a couple months, I think, but now I'm actually doing it! XD

1. What are your top five snack foods?
This is really tough! It totally depends on what I'm in the mood for, and it changes over time as well. Also some snacks I really love but don't eat as often as I'd like due to laziness. One example would be apples with peanut butter and sunflower seeds, but so often cutting up the apples is more work than I want to do. :p (I've discovered that baby carrots with peanut butter and sunflower seeds are a good substitute, though!) Cookies of any sort are popular, as I have a major sweet tooth and they tend to be filling. I like candy as a snack less so because there isn't usually enough to fill me up? If I could afford it, I'd eat Fugetsu-do's peanut butter mochi every day (the mochi is strawberry flavored so it's kind of like a peanut butter & jelly thing), but as it is, I rarely buy it. Also Kinokuni's peanut butter anpan (daifuku mochi filled with peanut butter and red bean paste and then baked into a bun), but they went out of business. SAD. Oh, and Trader Joe's trail mix. They have a lot of good ones, but there's a certain one I always get that has peanuts, almonds, cashews, chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, and raisins, and it's so good!

2. If you could live in any game world, which would you choose and why?
I always have to pass on these sorts of questions because my brain just can't go there. I'm real and fiction is fiction and never the twain shall meet. Sorry! XD

3. Do you have any pet peeves?
A lot! But of course when asked about them, nothing comes to mind. ^_^;; I doubt this is like number one on the list or anything, but it's the first thing I thought of, so: when people leave their grocery cart at the register instead of taking it outside (either to their car or the cart return). The way our store is set up, the cart return is right outside the only door, so you literally have to pass right by it in order to leave, and yet people will just leave their carts at the end of the register lane (or even worse, in the middle of the lane, blocking customers behind them) and then leave the store. This is a SUPER MAJOR ASSHOLE MOVE, guys. There isn't that much room in our store, so if you leave a grocery cart sitting there at the end of the aisle, it is in the way for everyone and you're just making extra work for a cashier or someone to have to go and take it outside, when it would not have been one single step out of your way to take it out yourself. Thanks, dickwad. :-|

4. What's the first manga you ever read in Japanese?
Hmmmmmmmmm...this is a really long time ago! It was probably Ranma 1/2 or Dragonball. When I first started reading manga in English, there was almost nothing available, and half of what was there was stuff like Gunsmith Cats that held zero appeal for me. I did discover Ranma, though, and bought those overpriced floppies faithfully every month for years before my Japanese was good enough to read the original. I also really fell hard for Dragonball, despite this being long before any of it was released in English. I had a friend in high school who was into it and had received some tapes from a friend in Japan and also had some trading cards, and I just really loved the art style. Anyway! I really can't remember what the first manga I read in Japanese was, but it was probably one of those two. I also started reading Please Save My Earth pretty early on, because the manga wasn't available in English and the anime was really unsatisfying. But prrrrrobably that wasn't my first. (Too bad my old LJ doesn't go back that far! What would I do without online journalling to remember things for me!?)

5. Describe your perfect day.
This is tough! I don't think I have an idea for what one perfect day would be. Even though I quite enjoy work right now, it would probably be a day with no work. A day where I have no committments and can just stay home and do nothing or go out if I want. I'm waking up pretty early these days, but still a day where I don't even have to worry about an alarm. Also the weather should be nice! Not hot. Not muggy. Cool or a bit warm is okay. Rain is fine if I'm indoors. I could just do whatever, probably translate some manga and maybe watch something or I don't even know. Really, just a relaxing day.

Man, sorry for all the non-answer answers! This is why I stress out about these things so much!

Anyway, if anyone wants me to ask them questions, just comment and let me know!
torachan: (Default)
[personal profile] via_ostiense asked about my favorite time of year.

That's a tough question! I don't live somewhere with drastic seasonal changes, there's maybe a 25-30 degree difference in average winter and summer temps. But I really dislike the heat, so even though it doesn't get super hot here, I don't like summer very much for that reason.

I do like the long days, though! If I could combine the long days of summer with the temperatures of winter, that would be perfect! But I'm not affected by SAD or anything like that, so really the only reason I dislike it getting dark so early is that even if I don't go to bed until 2am, if the sun goes down at 4.30 like it does now, I feel like it's late and I don't want to go out.

Winter has other good things going for it, too, though. I like all the various delicious holiday foods (as well as general winter foods) and I like Christmas lights (which reminds me, I should stop by Rite Aid at some point and get some; I kept mine up last year until they burnt out).

Spring and fall are also okay, though fall is often too warm for me. So yeah, I guess winter! Just about right now is a good time of year. :)

If there's something you want me to talk about, feel free to comment here!
torachan: a cartoon bear eating a large sausage (magical talking bear prostitute)
It seems like everyone on my flist is doing that meme where you ask people for topics to ramble on for each day of the month. At first I passed it up because it seemed like it could end up being quite stressful, and also because I haven't been leaving prompts for anyone else (not because I don't want to, but because inevitably when faced with something like that my mind goes blank and I can't think of anything to ask - I am looking forward to reading everyone else's posts, though!) but I've decided to give it a go after all, albeit in a slightly modified fashion. I'm not doing the assigned dates thing because that is an extra level of stress I don't need, plus it's highly unlikely anywhere near enough people would give me topics to fill up thirty days.

So, with that said, if there's anything you'd like to see me ramble on about, could be about manga, video games, TV shows, writing, fandom in general, work, life, other non-fannish stuff, whatever! It can be specific or general. It can be something I already talk about a fair amount or something you wish I'd talk about more. It can even be something you've never seen me express an opinion on but you're curious about my thoughts!

If you have something you'd like to see me talk about, just comment here and I will post about it sometime during the month. There's no time limit to leaving comments, so if you see this post a few days or even a few weeks late, you can still ask! (As long as it's still within December 2013, natch.)

AO3 meme

Oct. 20th, 2013 11:19 pm
torachan: john from garfield wearing a party hat and the text "this is boring with hats" (this is boring with hats)
Wow, this seems like a great way to procrastinate instead of finishing my [community profile] fan_byproducts fic. :D

Cut for fun with stats! )

I don't know how to make the box where you can c&p code, but I grabbed this meme from [personal profile] kate and she included it in her post, so you can grab it there, too, if you want!
torachan: aradia from homestuck (aradia)
21. Your 10 favorite foods
Wow, that's a tough one! I love so many foods! So this isn't necessarily my top ten, but rather ten foods I love that happened to come to mind.

wow, that got long )

22. The best thing to happen this year
Hrm, tough question. This year hasn't been particularly horrible, but there's also nothing really stand-out wonderful, I don't think? It was nice to get another raise early this year, since I wasn't expecting one after having just got one last fall. I'm also pretty excited that Irene got a job today!

23. Your dream job
I don't have one! I've never been really into the idea of a career, or had dreams of what I wanted to do when I grow up. Working is something I do to make enough money to live on and I don't really expect much from it. I liked translating a lot, but I don't like freelancing (I like the freedom of it, but not always trying to find work and all the crap that goes along with being self-employed in the US). I think translating works better as a hobby for me. But I actually really like working in a grocery store and would be happy to continue to work in that sort of environment the rest of my life, so I guess if anything counts as a "dream job", that would be it.

24. Your favorite childhood book
I don't think I had any one book that I loved above all others, but I did have one series that I loved more than anything, and that was the Three Investigators. I started reading them in first grade and eagerly bought each new book in the series until it stopped being released when I was in junior high.

The first one I read was Mystery of the Green Ghost. I remember being afraid to show my mom because of the title, since she was very religious and I thought she might tell me I couldn't read a book about ghosts (though it turned out not to be a real ghost anyway).

25. Your 5 favorite blogs
Most of the blogs I read are personal blogs here on DW/LJ and Tumblr.
torachan: arale from dr slump with a huge grin on her face (arale)
Oh hey, I was doing this meme! When I first started it, I was reminded to keep posting by seeing other people on my flist post theirs, but they have either abandoned or finished it, so I mostly keep forgetting.

And now here's a bunch of questions all together because we hit a row of "I don't really have an answer for this" type of ones. ^_^;;

16. What's at the top of your bucket list?
I don't have one? I mean, if it's big stuff like "I'd like to travel here or there", then there's not really that much likelihood of it happening and there's no use dwelling on it, and if it's little stuff like "I'd like to read this book or translate that manga", then there's not much point in making a list of it. If I died tomorrow, my thoughts would be more like "oh shit, I don't want to die" than "I wish I'd done this or that".

17. What is your most proud moment?
Also don't really have one, or at least nothing stands out.

18. The meaning behind your blog name
My DW name, [personal profile] torachan, is just my nickname. Travis is difficult to pronounce in Japanese, so a lot of people at work have taken to calling me Tora or Tora-chan. I have wanted to move to a more real-name type username for a while, but unfortunately someone has been namesquatting [personal profile] travis since DW's inception! >:(

As for my LJ username, [ profile] kyuuketsukirui, it means the vampire Louis in Japanese and was never meant to be a personal account! Back when I first started writing fic and it was all Vampire Chronicles, I had a fic website and wanted a URL (it was on Geocities!) that had something to do with VC. I'm terribly unimaginative, so all the combinations of Louis and Lestat and stuff like that that I tried in English were all taken, so I decided to make it in Japanese. Then I made my LJ as an update blog for my fic and art, totally not intending to use it for journalling purposes (I already had [ profile] megchan for that). But then some friends of mine started a VC comm on LJ and I wanted to join, and ended up doing so with my VC journal instead of my personal journal, and then I started using that for general fannish interaction with those people, which became fannish interaction with other non-VC people, and the whole time I felt like ugh, I hate this name and it's hard for people to pronounce and spell, but it was what people knew me by, so I couldn't change it.

19. What do you collect?
Not a whole lot these days! I used to collect all manner of things. When I was little I collected plastic Disney figures (back in the days before there was any such thing as a Disney store and hardly any Disney merch in general shops, so mostly they were bought from Disneyland or a few from like Hallmark stores). In college I had an unfortunate Beanie Baby phase, and around the same time also obsessively collected Digimon cards. Irene and I also collected video game systems for a while, and we had enough systems and games for a small shop. Oh, and there was Pokemon. Back when Pokemon was first getting popular in the US, I bought every Pokemon toy I could find. And of course Japanese stuff as well. Oh, and legos. I never had a lot of legos as a kid because they were expensive, so I bought a lot as an adult. And manga! At one point I owned over a thousand volumes of manga because I saved everything I read.

So much money spent on trinkety stuff that just sits there and collects dust! I don't mind the sitting there part so much, if only there was a way to have them not get dusty (that didn't involve putting everything in glass cases).

I still sometimes feel the urge to buy stuff like that, but mostly I don't. I just decided at some point that I didn't want the clutter and didn't want to have to be dusting all the time. So now I mostly don't buy anything, or I buy stuff digitally so that I don't have anything sitting around.

I guess the most tempting still is video games, because it's something I could theoretically use. But I don't have all the time I would need to play all the games I want to buy, so I try to limit myself. (Whereas before I would just buy anything that looked cool, and that's one reason why I was in a lot of debt for a while!)

20. A difficult time in your life
My life has really not been that difficult compared to a lot of people. Probably the most difficult thing has been my mom kicking Irene out.
torachan: aradia from homestuck (aradia)
15. Timeline of your day
Well, that really depends on the day. The timeline for my work days is quite different from my days off. But maybe they mean this day that I'm posting on, in which case it was my day off and here's how it went. All times super approximate.

10.30am: Wake up and stumble out of bed. Don't eat anything because I'm going out with my mom for lunch around noon.

10.30am - 11.40am: Internet.

11.40am: Oops, mom's coming over soon, better get dressed. Of course she drives up right while I'm getting dressed, but I already opened the door so don't have to worry about running to get it.

11.45am - 1.30pm: Lunch at La Cabaña. I hadn't been there in years and neither had my mom. I was expecting it might be crowded for lunch, but I think we got there before any real lunch rush, so there was hardly anyone else there.

1.45pm - 2.15pm: Facetime with Irene. We didn't talk too long, maybe half an hour, as she had to have a tooth pulled this morning and was not feeling great.

2.15pm - 6pm: Internet. Watched last week's episode of Silver Spoon. More internet.

6pm - 7.30pm: Took a walk up to the store. Listened to several episodes of Night Vale on my walk (The Sandstorm Part B, Poetry Week, and A Memory of Europe).

7.30pm - now: Internet. Oh, and I ate dinner when I got home, too.

Now - bedtime: More internet. Hopefully get some manga translating done and maybe some lyrics.

Anywhere between midnight and 2am I will go to bed and proceed to play games on my phone, read, and/or listen to more Night Vale until I actually go to sleep.
torachan: karkat from homestuck looking bored (karkat bored)
12. What's inside your fridge?
Uh...a lot. A full list would be both boring and more work than I'm willing to do for this question, so off the top of my head: one and a half pizzas that I ordered from Dominos last night, a large pot half full of rice, a two liter of green tea, several packages of noodles (hiyashi chuka and soba), a quarter of a watermelon (and the end bit of the last quarter I bought), cheese (shredded Mexican mix and a partial block of extra sharp cheddar), a dozen eggs, two gallons of tap water (I usually try to keep three filled so that I always have cold water to drink, but one needs a refill), a bottle each of Teas'Tea matcha latte and black tea latte (500 ml), four single-serving Yoplait yogurts in flavors I can't remember, a large tub of honey lemon Greek Gods yogurt, a tupperware full of kinpira gobo, a ziploc baggie of chopped green onion, a partial bag of sliced carrots, a half pound of roast beef, a package of alfalfa sprouts, and way too many condiments and sauces to mention.

13. What is your earliest memory?
I used to say it was the Christmas I was two-and-a-half. I have three distinct memories of the same day, all of which were at my great-aunt's house: playing in the hallway with my aunt and cousin (both teenagers), playing alone in my great-uncle's study with the Colorforms I got for Christmas that day, and then playing on the brick steps outside of his study and losing a Colorform piece down the cracks of the steps (so upsetting to wee!me!).

However, I think another memory is actually earlier than those. I remember standing on the side of the driveway at my grandparents' house and watching my uncle get out of my grandparents' van in his wheelchair. My uncle died right around when I turned two, so this must have been before the Christmas memories. (It's not nearly as long or involved as the Christmas ones, though.)

I also have quite a few other memories when I was two-ish (and many, many more when I was 3+), and I'm not sure when in the year exactly they happened, so they could be before the Christmas ones, too. It's just that Christmas (obviously) is easy to place.

14. If you won the lottery...
I don't like these sort of questions since it's not something that's ever going to happen anyway.
torachan: (Default)
9. What are your worst habits?
I have tons, but for sure the worst is procrastination. I try to do things to manage it, like using a to-do list and breaking things up into small chunks, but a lot of the time I still end up frittering away my time instead of actually doing the things I want to get done. At least I don't do that at work, mainly because I can't. If I had the freedom to be on the net at work, I would probably end up procrastinating there, too. :p

10. What's your best physical feature?
Um, I don't know. I actually like my face pretty well.
torachan: nepeta from homestuck (nepeta)
Shorter questions this time, so I'm doing a few at once.

3. Your favorite quote
When I first read this question, I was like ugh, I never have answers for that sort of thing! Because the thing is, I always read "favorite quote" as meaning something serious or meaningful to you, and I just don't think of quotes that way. But then I realised I do have a lot of favorite quotes if you count lines I say all the time from The Simpsons and other such shows! Though of course I can't seem to remember any off hand. XD

So here are two random things I could actually remember and find videos for. :)

"You slip me the cash and I'll slip you the wiener."

"But I don't have the cash!"

"Then I don't have a wiener!"

-Adventures in Babysitting

"No one's gay for Moleman."

-The Simpsons

4. What are you afraid of?
I was going to say dying, but it's really more than that. The biggest fear I have is that my mom and all those extremist Christians are right about all the horrible things they say about God and the afterlife, etc. I want death to just be nothingness, but I'm afraid it will actually be eternal torment. And basically just, if God is really like how these people describe, he's a horrible being and it's just depressing to think about. :-/
torachan: ewan mcgregor pulling his glasses down to look over the top (ewan glasses)
Hmm, well, I did mean for this to be an every day thing, but I guess it's not. ^_^;; I was having a hard time coming up with facts. :p

2. 20 facts about you

loooooong )
torachan: an avatar of me done scott pilgrim style (scott pilgrim style me)
Sometimes I see these sort of things go around and while there are some questions I'm interested in answering, the majority are ones I have no answer to, so I end up not doing them. But while this one has a few of those, the majority are ones I can answer and actually have something to say about, plus the first question is an introduction, which is something I've been meaning to do since I did that friending meme last year and then gave up on because it was too stressful to think of something to say, so.

This would have been better if I'd found it at the beginning of the month, but I didn't, and if I wait until the beginning of next month, I probably won't do it, so whatever. I might double (or triple) up on some days if the answers are really short.

1. Introduction and recent photo

Full list of questions )
torachan: aradia from homestuck (aradia)
I saw several posts on my flist over the past few days, reminding me that it's that time of year again when we revist the hit count meme. I really like the idea of this becoming a yearly thing and seeing what changes there are. On the one hand, it might be more interesting if I actually wrote more fic these days, but on the other hand, since I'm not writing a ton of new fic and having the list each year just be my most recent fics in big fandoms, instead I get to compare how the same fics do from year to year. (And I think it's especially interesting to do it on AO3 as opposed to any other site, because AO3 is still growing. In fact, I wish I'd thought to do something like this for more than just the past two years.)

Anyway, on to the list!

For comparison, here are the previous years:

2011 )

2012 )

And this year's:

2013 )

blather )

I did take a look at the top twenty last year, so I'd like to compare those as well.

2012 )

2013 )

blather )

I think I'd like to take a look at kudos, too, but maybe will save that for another day...
