torachan: takatsuki & nitorin from hourou musuko (trans kids)
Usually I save my reading posts for the end of the day on Wednesday, but this week I not only have read a lot, but I've actually read stuff I want to talk about, so I'm posting right after midnight! XD

What are you currently reading?
Right now I'm reading vol. 7 of Crimson Hero. I read the first six volumes of this early last year, I think, and then just set it aside for a while because I got distracted by other stuff. But I'm trying to get through the backlog of manga I already have loaded onto my phone and there were several more volumes of this on there, so!

Anyway, I'm still enjoying it! It's a shoujo manga about a girls' volleyball team. The frustrating thing is that I could only find scans up through vol. 16 and there are 20 total. It's not available as an ebook and at this point is not available at the bookstore near me, either (they have really limited space, so pretty much only carry currently running series). It's possible that if I went down to Book Off they'd have the last four volumes, but idk. So I may have to order them from Japan to finish the series. >_< (Or maybe I'll just read the last four volumes in English, as it appears to have been fully scanlated. I hate when scanlators don't release their raws.)

What did you recently finish reading?
I have managed to read one volume of manga a day so far this year! Obviously this isn't something I can keep up the whole year unless I don't plan to read anything but manga (and there are books and fic I'd like to read!), but I really would like to try and read more manga than I have lately, so this is a good start!

The first two things I read were Aoi Futari and Ashita wa Dotchi Da, a couple of one-shot collections by Shiina Karuho, author of Kimi ni Todoke. Honestly, both were mostly forgettable. Cute enough stories that I didn't feel like I was wasting my time, but nothing on the level of Kimi ni Todoke. And one story was so obnoxious that it completely colored my view of the whole volume of Aoi Futari.

I expected better of Shiina Karuho because Kimi ni Todoke is so awesome (and I have enjoyed the other stuff of hers I've read), but this one-shot was terrible! I knew going in it was going to be meh because the main guy is a huge jerk and yet of course you know she's going to get with him. But it ends with her realising that while she had twice said she hated him (once as a kid and once in high school), he'd never said he hated her, and so she thinks like "how can I even begin to apologise?" But the reason she'd said she hated him was because he was a jerk to her! From the very first time they met, he was awful, and he was consistently awful in every interaction she's had with him over her lifetime. But in the end she is the bad one because she reacted to that by saying she hated him. UGH. I really expected better. The other two stories in this collection were cute (though not great), but this was the final one so it just ended on an awful note and colored my whole view of the collection.

So I would anti-rec that volume, even if you were wanting to read all of Shiina Karuho's old stuff! Or just read the first two stories in it and skip the last one. (Though it looks like only the title story has been scanlated anyway.)

Next I read volume 5 of Centaur no Nayami, which continues to be a delight. I just would never have guessed that something which looks like nothing but pure fanservice fluff would have such solid and detailed world-building. But it's clear the author has a worldbuilding kink as well as a kink for cute girls with various animal parts. XD I especially liked the random historical flashback chapter about Napoleon freeing the centaur slaves.

I also read the third and final volume of Mizusawa Megumi's Tera Girl. It was a cute series and I'm sorry to see it end for that reason, but I'm satisfied with the ending and it felt like it ended in a good place.

And last, but not least, I finally read the last two volumes of Hourou Musuko (though I had actually read about half of volume 14 in magazine scans). I had downloaded them quite some time ago but put off reading them because I was spoiled for the ending and so it was something I really had to work up to reading.

In the end, though, I'm not sorry I read it and I don't think it's a bad story. I just wish that I had not discovered it until it was already over and so I would have known certain things going into it. So many years of following along as it came out made me really invested, as well as, obviously, the fact that as a story about gender identity, it's very personal to me.

General feelings about the series as a whole as well as the ending )

So, yeah. I have a lot of feelings, but in the end I'm glad I read it and I do think it's a good story. And now I want ALL the fic about Nitorin and Anna being cute girlfriends.

What do you think you'll read next?
Probably at least a few volumes of Crimson Hero, but then who knows? There is a lot of stuff on my phone to choose from.

Title: Crazy for You
Author: Shiina Karuho
Number of Volumes: 6
My Rating: 4/5

Summary: Sachi goes to an all-girls' school and has zero experience with boys. When she goes on a group date with some girls in her class, she falls for Yuki, but he says while he really likes Sachi, he could never see her as girlfriend material. They try to be just friends, but soon things get even more complicated, and although she knows the best thing would be to move on and find happiness with someone else, she just can't seem to get over Yuki.

Review: This is an earlier series by the author of Kimi ni Todoke, which is one of my favorite manga ever. This has a lot of what I like in Kimi ni Todoke, but I really am not that big a fan of love-triangle plots, especially ones like this. I actually liked the guy she didn't get with a lot more (except for the part where he threatened to rape her if she didn't choose him (!?), which was totally OOC and gross and yet not treated as such in the text). I did like how Yuki's ~first love he could never get over~ was handled, though. And this has some great friendships. Definitely an enjoyable read, just not as awesome as Kimi ni Todoke (which I shouldn't have expected, but still).

This series has been fully scanlated (it's not listed as complete on this group's page, but that's just because they haven't done the unrelated one-shot included in the last volume).

1. So I work next to a Taco Bell and a lot of us at work eat over there fairly often, and a lot of folks who work there come into our store to buy lunch and snacks. Apparently Taco Bell is relaunching their breakfast line, and they have these coupons for free items, and so yesterday one of the girls who works there gave us a whole book of them to share amongst ourselves and give to any customers if we want. She also said we can use multiple ones at a time, even though they say just one per customer per visit. So tomorrow is on of my morning days and I'm planning to go a bit early and have a free breakfast burrito and Cinnabon puff thingies. :D

2. The Craigslist guy came today and I am now the proud owner of $50 and he is the proud owner of an exercise bike. I kind of wish we could keep it, but it's always seemed too big for this house, and we are going to be downgrading from two bedrooms to no bedrooms, so there will definitely be no room for it. XD Also I'm pretty sure the guy and his wife took the magazines we had out on the curb, too, as I happened to look outside five or ten minutes after they'd left and the magazines were gone.

3. I finished reading the newest volume of Kimi ni Todoke today and omg it's so awesome! It's mostly flashbacks of wee!Chizu and Ryu and they are just so adorable and it made me all flaily reading it. Especially Ryu! I just...gah! His little face! And how Chizu understands him when nobody else does! As for Ayane and Kent, idk idk. I like Kent a lot, and I won't be unhappy if he and Ayane get together (which at this point seems kind of inevitable), but I also really like Ayane and Pin! And if I were really to have my heart's wish (which has like zero chance of being true) I like asexual!Ayane and Kent as her gay best friend. I mean, she talks about never having liked anyone before! And Kent has this crowd of girls that hang around him because it's nice having a guy friend they can confide their love woes to. XD It's all right there! So yeah. I know that's not going to happen, and I'm pretty okay with that. I wouldn't mind the fanfic, though.

Title: Ibitsu na Hoshi no Katachi
Author: Shiina Karuho
Number of Volumes: 1
My Rating: 5/5

Shiina Karuho is, of course, most famous for her currently-running series, Kimi ni Todoke. Aside from one other short series, Crazy for You, all of her manga is one-shots. I had actually never read anything else of hers before Kimi ni Todoke, but I loved that so much that when I happened to see this one, I grabbed it immediately.

This is from 1999, so her artwork is much rougher (though still cute), but I really enjoyed the three stories in this collection. The strong friendships, innocent romance, and adorkable awkwardness I love in Kimi ni Todoke are all present here.

1. I have essentially finished both the [livejournal.com profile] help_pakistan things I promised to have done by the October 1st deadline! (I still have two more doujinshi to do for [personal profile] umadoshi, but I only promised to have one done by the end of the month, and I have. Woohoo!)

I say essentially because while I have actually sent the FMA translation off to [personal profile] yhlee, I am confounded on one line in this Fruits Basket doujinshi and waiting for a hopefully clearer scan. In the meantime, anyone here want to take a look and see if you can figure it out?

I uploaded the page here. I have stared at that character for so long trying to figure out what the hell that blob is on the left-hand side. I'm pretty sure the right half is 頁, so I've looked at all the characters with that as a radical but can't see any with a right half that looks like what there is there and I'm not thinking of anything it could be from context, either (there isn't really a lot of context, tbh). Have I been staring too long and missed something totally obvious? I literally have all the other pages completely translated, cleaned up, text on, and everything, and am stalled out on this one little line.

2. Anyway! Um, it's another ten degrees cooler than it was yesterday, woohoo! Still warm enough that I couldn't get to sleep after going out this morning, but hopefully I can get a nap this evening.

3. Had my third shot this morning. :D I really do think my voice is dropping. I'm kind of tempted to make another video now, but I think I'll just wait til the one-month mark.

4. Tasty grapes were on sale at Albertson's today. Such a great snack for hot weather. Om nom nom.

5. I read Kimi ni Todoke vol. 12 last night and omg, you'd think this series could not get any cuter, but it DOES. Spoilers ) Seriously, every page of this manga just makes me all heartbursty and glee-y and *_*.

Brandon Flowers - Hard Enough (feat. Jenny Lewis)
I only just downloaded his solo album the other day and haven't really given it much of a listen yet, but I really liked this song so far.

1. The rain stopped for most of the day and we got two nice walks in. We got rained on a bit when we were out the first time, but it was just sprinkling.

2. I have really been enjoying Twilight Princess. I beat the first temple tonight. Somehow it took me 7 hours to get this far. O_o I was thinking about how with the original Zelda there's not all this beginning stuff. You're just dropped in the middle of the desert and go. No story even, really. To be honest, I kind of miss those days. I don't play RPGs for the story. Still, even though this had a slow start with all the blah blah blah stuff, once it got going, it's really fun. I do wish it were more traditional cartoony graphics, though. I often find it hard to differentiate stuff with this "realistic" style. In terms of the movements and stuff, though, it's pretty similar to Ocarina of Time? Obviously it's a bit different with the Wii controllers, though.

3. I am so in love with Kimi ni Todoke. ♥♥♥♥♥ Today I should have been doing all sorts of stuff, but pretty much I just read that and played Zelda. Oops? (Also I wrote a drabble that took me hours! And I had half of it written already, so really it took me hours to write like fifty words! Well, I wrote more, but had to delete them to get it down to 100. Editing!) Anyway, Kimi ni Todoke! *_* Sawako is so cute. I have never seen a cuter manga heroine. She is just adorable (and adorkable). And Kazehaya! And Chizu! And Ayane! And Ryu! I think I love Ryu best after Sawako, actually. And Pin! And Kurumi! I love everyone. And it's hilarious, too. Hilarious and heartbursty and I just love it to death.
