What are you currently reading?
Currently reading All I Asking for Is My Body by Milton Murayama. I actually started this several years ago and then despite the fact that it's only like 100 pages total, I stalled out around page 30 and forgot about it. Then the other day when I was looking on my shelf to pick out a physical book to read, I saw it there and remembered I was already partially through, so I decided to finish it up. I've read another 30 pages or so and will probably finish it today or tomorrow actually. It's about a Japanese family living on a sugar plantation in Hawaii pre-WWII, which is a subject I know absolutely nothing about, so it's interesting reading.

The Girl with All the Gifts by MR Carey. Someone on my flist read and reviewed this within the last couple years, which is how I heard about it, but I can't for the life of me remember who. (My first guess was [personal profile] rachelmanija but I checked her tags and didn't see one for this author.) I had thought after reading the review that I was spoiled for the major reveal of the book, but it turned out that was something that was clear from the beginning and not a big spoiler at all.

This book combines so many things I love. Post-apocalyptic setting, the cross-country trek, sciency explanations for classic horror tropes. And Melanie is the best. Just hands-down the best. I also found the ending very satisfying. I had wondered how it was going to work out, because it really didn't seem like there could be a happy ending for Melanie, even if she didn't get dissected by Dr. Caldwell (which I was pretty sure wasn't going to happen), but what happened was just perfect.

I think I'm finally going to read Raising Steam! Even though Moist is my favorite Discworld character, I have been dragging my feet on this and the final Tiffany Aching book, for I guess pretty obvious reasons. But I'm going to do it!

What are you currently reading?
I am currently reading vol. 3 of Amaama to Inazuma, which continues to be in the "cute but not in love with it" category for me.

Bookwise, I'm a couple chapters in to The Westing Game, which I read several times as a kid, but remember virtually nothing about. I saw [personal profile] thefourthvine tweet about it the other day and was like, oh hey, I remember liking that, and here we are.

What did you recently finish reading?
I finished several things!

I finally finished For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood. Overall it was interesting, but I really got bogged down in the detailed explanations of how to implement his suggestions in the classroom. Obviously that would be a real plus to readers who actually are teachers (whether in the "hood" or not; honestly a lot of his suggestions are just good strategies overall in terms of getting students more engaged in learning rather than just straight up lecturing to them), but for me it was slow going. Also it really did feel like an academic text, rather than something aimed at laymen, and as such just wasn't as engaging to me.

I also read Fallout by Gwenda Bond, a YA novel about teen!Lois Lane getting her start in journalism. It was a lot of fun, but I kind of wish it had left out Clark Kent as her mysterious chat buddy and just focused on her and the friends she makes at her new Metropolis high school. It looks like there's a second book out in the series, and I'm definitely going to pick that up at some point.

Mangawise, I finished up Tetsugaku Letra, a short (6 volume) series about a boy who takes up flamenco dancing after a chance encounter with a girl who is about to throw her dance shoes away because she's too tall and awkward for dancing. The boy was about to throw away his basketball shoes because he's no good at basketball, and instead they trade shoes. At first he just sticks her shoes in the shoe cabinet at home, but a couple years later he happens to see her playing basketball, now the star of her team, and using his old shoes as a good luck charm. This prompts him to take her dance shoes out of the cabinet and finds they are just his size, and he decides to find someone to teach him flamenco dancing. It was pretty cute! (It looks like it's been fully scanlated at Batoto.)

What do you think you'll read next?
No idea! I'm not really near the point of picking something else yet.

What are you currently reading?
Nothing at the moment. Oh wait, no, I did start something, but only got a few pages in. It's a book I got from BookMooch a few weeks ago, The Sweeter the Juice, which I feel I must have put on my wishlist years ago after seeing someone post about it on 50books_poc or something. It seems interesting, but as a physical book rather than ebook, it's probably going to take longer to get through.

What did you recently finish reading?
I finished reading a book. A whole other book. In like four days! Whaaaat?

The book I finished reading is the one I mentioned in my last reading post as something I was considering next, Francis Hardinge's Cuckoo Song. It was so good! I got totally sucked in and it was really hard to put down. I don't think I've been this into a book in a long time.

I'm really glad I went into it unspoiled because the beginning was just so intriguing and I was right there with Triss trying to figure out what the hell was going on. I was at first a little disappointed with the answer, but soon got caught up in the rest of the book.

Non-spoilery summary: It's set in England after World War I. Eleven-year-old Triss falls into the river while on holiday with her parents and younger sister Pen, and when they pull her out she can't remember anything and strange things start happening. Her parents reassure her she's fine, but her sister now seems to hate her. Triss doesn't know what's wrong with her and fears she's sick and/or going crazy.

More spoilery summary! But really I think it's best read without knowing anything. )

My (spoilery) impressions ) Anyway, it's really good!!

I also read vol. 10 of Ore Monogatari!!

What do you think you'll read next?
I downloaded vol. 11 of Ore Monogatari!! today and since I'm still in the mood, that will probably be my nighttime reading tonight. I also found that 7 Seeds 31 is out, which I may read right away or not. I love that series so much sometimes I hold off on reading new volumes because I know I'll be left wanting more once I finish it. Oh, and there was a new volume of Shimura Takako's Musume no Iede as well, so there's that.

What are you currently reading?
Still reading Kingdom Coming, though I hope to finish it within the next few days.

I also started reading Urasawa Naoki's Monster, though I only read the first few pages of the first volume so far. It's one of those series that is recced everywhere, and I did love 20th Century Boys, so I have high hopes!

What did you recently finish reading?
I finally finished Console Wars tonight!

Despite its slow start, I ended up really enjoying it! )

I also read a single volume manga called Gray Romance by Natsuko Kusuda, a collection of one-shots on the subject of love and romance but not the way they're usually written in manga (unhappy endings and situations that aren't the typical "they met and fell in love" kind of thing). I liked it a lot and put it in my "possible projects" folder for maybe future scanlating.

What do you think you'll read next?
I don't know! I've downloaded various ebooks recently that look good, but haven't actually settled on anything yet.

What are you currently reading?
I started Koiiji vol. 2, but by started I mean like opened to the first page. I am not actually reading anything just yet!

What did you recently finish reading?
I did it! I finished Fresh Off the Boat!

It was...okay. )

I also finished reading Koiiji vol. 1, which I ended up liking a lot more as I went on, and since it seems no one is translating it yet, I've started doing that myself. :D

What do you think you'll read next?
Not sure! I need to poke through my ebooks and see if anything is calling to me.
