Candy post
I've been writing reviews and photographing stuff as I buy it lately, since I noticed I was really unlikely to review anything unless I bought a whole bunch of candy/snacks at one time, which doesn't happen that often. So tonight I got a few more things from the 99 Cent Store and it seemed like I had more than enough for a post. Doing it little by little made it all seem like a lot less work, too, which was nice. :D

Clove Chewing Gum is pretty much what it says on the package. You get five strips of clove-flavored gum. If you like cloves, you'll probably love this. If not, you probably won't. XD I fall into the former category, but even so, I was unsure exactly how much I would like this. I've never had spice gum that wasn't the usual mint and cinnamon flavors (and I'm not a big fan of any of those; peppermint is okay, but mint in gum tends to be wintergreen or spearmint, both of which are yuck). It's really great, though! I doubt I would buy it again, because I don't really chew gum that much and it was 50 cents for five pieces, but I'm glad I tried it. I like the retro packaging, too.

Choco Banana Pocky is really pretty much just like every other chocolate-banana Pocky I've had. Nice new packaging, but the inside is nothing new. It tastes mostly like banana with a bit of chocolate. Good, but I'm not sure why they needed to make yet another version.

Fran is a Pocky-like product by Meiji. I haven't had it as often as Pocky, as they don't seem to have as many different flavors, and they always seem to be more expensive. I couldn't resist this Apricot Fran, though, because apricot is one of my favorite flavors. The cookie is thicker than a Pocky, and lightly chocolate flavored. The candy coating is the thick kind like on the Pocky Decor line. There are four packs of three sticks, which I think is about the same as the Decor, too. When I first took a bite, I didn't get much apricot flavor, but it kicked in pretty soon and omg, it was so good. It's a good thing I haven't seen these around locally (I got them at Marukai in Gardena, where we can only go a few times a year when we rent a car), because otherwise I would be tempted to buy them even at $2.50 or whatever they cost.

Custard Pudding Kit Kat is supposedly flan-flavored (there's the picture on the bag, but also "pudding" generally means flan in Japan, unless it's actually specified to be some other flavor), but it just tasted sweet to me, not like anything in particular. It actually reminded me of some other flavor Kit Kat, but I don't know which one (there are so many!). It's white chocolate, unsurprisingly, which I'm not a huge fan of, but I liked it a lot.

Blood Orange Dots are...well, they're nowhere near as bad as the Tropical Dots. In fact, they're oddly addictive. They are not at all "blood orange", just vaguely orange-tasting in that "I'm not sure I would even guess these were orange if it didn't say so on the box" sort of way. And while at first glance, they look black, they are actually a dark greenish-blue and will turn your tongue blue after eating a few (they turn your poop blue, too, but I didn't take a picture of that XD). Anyway, I really disliked them at first, but like I said, they were oddly addictive and kind of grew on me. We even bought a second box when the first one got eaten and thrown away before I could photograph it.

Camu Camu Hi-Chew is part of their World Fruits series. I reviewed the American Cherry and Dragonfruit before (and maybe some others?), but had never seen this one. I'd also never heard of Camu Camu, but from the picture it appears to be some sort of grapeish berry. It's good. Not the best flavor I've ever tasted, maybe a little tart for me. But still pretty tasty.

The Cadbury Turkish Delight bar is not really much different from their Turkish Delight squares. It's candy bar-shaped and bigger (though not that much more expensive, so it's a much better deal), and the chocolate is thicker, but really, if you've had one of those chocolate-coated squares, it won't be any sort of surprise. It's delicious, though. And after having a few more pieces, the tartness reminds me more of American fruit candy. I hadn't really noticed this before, but now that I think of it, Japanese fruit candy doesn't tend to go for tart as much, where it seems to be the default in the US. Sucking on these reminded me of Now and Laters (though not any particular flavors).

I'm not a big fan of wafer cookies, but I am a big fan of coconut, so I had to try Bauducco Wafer Coconut (which despite the odd name is a product of the US) when I found them tonight at the 99 Cent Store. As you can see from the picture, the cookies look nothing like the picture on the package, which frankly is not much of a surprise coming from something at the 99 Cent Store. But even though they didn't look like much, and they didn't smell like much, they did have a really good coconut taste. I probably wouldn't buy these again, but I definitely won't have any trouble eating the rest of the package.

Okayo Wafer Orange Cream was another 99 Cent Store find. They appear to be from Vietnam! Again, the cookie looks nothing like the package. The chocolate was so thin that parts of the bottom of the cookie were completely uncovered. There was a very strong orange smell when I opened the outer package, but the cookies themselves didn't taste that orangey. These were okay, but I definitely liked the coconut ones better.

I saw these packs of Mallo Cups and had to get them. I've never seen Mallo Cups before, though I've heard of them. They're made in Pennsylvania and I think are more of a regional thing, so I'm really surprised to see them here. The cups are very, very tiny (wider than a Reese's mini cup, but not as tall), but I was getting eight of them for a dollar, so it's not too bad a deal at that price. I would not buy a flowing marshmallow product on my own, but I don't exactly dislike them, either, so I figured for a review, why not? The chocolate was pretty thin and had a coconut taste to it (no mention of coconut on the front package, but it is listed in the ingredients), and the marshmallow centre was still goopy and flowing, even though some had leaked out onto the paper cup.

Since I was trying the Mallo Cups, I figured I'd do a head-to-head with Cup-o-Gold, which is made in LA, so I guess it's our regional version (everywhere in the US seems to have some sort of flowing marshmallow cup). I thought I had had one before, but maybe not, as it didn't taste familiar at all. I do see them in the stores all the time, though, so maybe I'd just assumed I'd had one. These do explicitly say that the chocolate has coconut in it, as well as almonds, however, I actually got much less of a coconut taste from this than the Mallo Cup. The chocolate was super thick, though, which was nice because I think it helped keep the marshmallow from leaking out, unlike the Mallo Cup. The centre seemed almost exactly the same on both of them. The size of the Cup-o-Gold was huge, 1.25oz, which is probably about the same size or bigger than those Reese's Big Cups. It's 2.5 times the size of one of these Mallo Cups, but since I'm not a huge fan of these things, I wouldn't have minded a smaller size. :p Overall both Mallo Cups and Cup-o-Gold are enjoyable, though not something I need to go out and buy again.
