Weekly Reading

What are you currently reading?
Made a little progress on The History of Forgetting. Still did not start Hollow City. I'm thinking maybe I should read something else instead, since I seem to not be interested in actually starting that up.

What did you recently finish reading?
I finished A Wrinkle in Time today. Definitely file this under things I wish I'd left back in vaguely-remembered nostalgia land. :-/

As a kid, things like the heavy-handed religious themes and sexism went over my head. However, those things, along with the fact that the book is just not very well written, made it really hard to enjoy as an adult. And then there's the ending, where love saves Charles Wallace, but there's no indication as to what happened to IT. Did Meg's love kill IT? Or did she just snatch Charles Wallace and run, and IT is still out there wreaking havoc? I'm pretty sure all the other books have separate plots, so it's not something that is resolved in a future book. Instead it just ends abruptly and unsatisfyingly.

Anyway, I am still looking forward to seeing the movie, and this is one of the few times I hope that a movie is really different from the book. But I will definitely not be reading any of the sequels, and I honestly wish I hadn't reread this.

What do you think you'll read next?
Hopefully some more of Billy Bat. I have been going to bed late and been too tired to read in bed lately, so I haven't read anything on my phone or ipad (that's probably the main reason I haven't started Hollow City, either, so I really should try to get in bed earlier!).

Even as a kid, I found A Wrinkle in Time confusing as hell and had some of the same questions you did about the ending. I remember liking A Swiftly Tilting Planet much more, though I haven't read it in ages.

This was a series I wish I hadn't re-read as an adult. I was so disappointed to discover the magic I remembered just wasn't there.

I felt the same way about L'Engle as an adult.
