1. Day off tomorrow, yay.

2. Well, I didn't end up having so much extra time at work that I was able to start new projects like moving the old invoices, but I did take care of everything that came into my inbox today (which was quite a bit) and so I ended the day with an empty inbox again. :D

3. I was thinking about how I'm only following three Jump series now, so theoretically it should be fairly easy to keep up if I made the effort now to read the ten or so chapters that I'm behind. But even with only three series, I can see myself falling behind again just because it's such a pain to download each chapter with all the hoops you have to jump through for these free hosting sites (and the messageboard I download from adds more hoops as well).

And then I was reminded in two different instances of how Viz is now releasing digital chapters of many WSJ series (including Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece, which are the ones I am currently following) simultaneously with Japan now, and I thought, you know what, that's pretty awesome. Ever since I learned to read Japanese, I pretty much stopped reading manga in English because, well, at the time there was hardly anything available in English, and then later there was a lot, but it was more expensive than buying Japanese copies, and then later still I was downloading the raws for free, and there's always been the issue of even professional translations often not being that great.

But these three seem decent, and the price for a subscription is $25.99 a year, which is about 50 cents per issue, so even considering I'm only reading three chapters per week, I think I'm getting my 50 cents worth.

Which is to say, I decided to buy a subscription to Viz's Shonen Jump. :) The other series they're running don't really interest me that much. I thought maybe if they had Kuroko no Basket, I would give that a try, but they don't seem to. If I'm bored maybe I'll check some of the others out, though.

Ideally I would be able to buy the Japanese version of Jump, and digital Japanese manga in general, but stupid region locking means I am stuck with Viz.

4. This is the best puppy video ever.

Ooh, wow. I ... am tempted by that. It'd be way cheaper than buying them as individual volumes. (Not that I've done that lately. But I have a vague wish to get back into it. And the price is pretty cheap!)

It's fascinating to me to think about how much things have changed, especially looking back on when I first got into anime -- I mean, hell, when I discovered it for the very first time, I was a kid and it was the '80s and I lived in a relatively small town. We had a local UHF station that ran a bunch of dubbed and butchered import anime (Robotech and Captain Harlock and that sort of thing), and although I learned of manga (that it existed, I mean) from buying Robotech tie-in books, I had no idea where I might buy such an animal. And then there was college, which brought bootleg VHS, and really popular manga starting to become available in comic stores. And then the Internet happened, but even in my really big anime/manga fanning period (about 1999-2002) you still had to rely on fansubs and scanlations if you wanted to be able to follow along in real time, or if you wanted faithfully translated and uncut versions.

... and now you have concurrent releases of popular series, and translations of almost everything (except the really obscure stuff). Wow. We are living in the future. XD

Yeah, it's pretty amazing. Even though I really prefer to read manga in Japanese, I'm glad to support Viz in this because I want to encourage them.
