Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei 11. I had hoped that taking some time away from the series and reading other stuff would make it feel less samey the next time I picked up a volume, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Or maybe this volume is just not that great. Which is not to say it hasn't had its moments, but they've been few and far between, with some chapters just being boring from beginning to end (not what you want in a gag manga).
When I first started reading this manga, I loved it. The first several volumes were hilarious. But the longer it goes on, the more it just feels like it's repeating itself. I usually like to read things all in one go (especially if it's completed series), but this one I'm having to space out because it just doesn't do well in large chunks. Or even small chunks, if this volume is anything to go by.
The completist in me wants to finish the whole series, but I kind of dread the thought of twenty more volumes of this, so we'll see. If nothing else, I think I'll take a longer break from it after this.
What did you recently finish reading?
I read up through volume five of Crimson Hero and would totally have kept on with that if I had more on my ipod. I'm really enjoying it a lot and it's a fast read. I do want to vary my reading more, though, so will continue to only put a few volumes at a time on my ipod. :p
I also read up through the end of Katekyo Hitman Reborn! I actually didn't know it had ended, since I fell behind on my Jump reading again a while back. But when I went to look at Wikipedia to see when the next volume was coming out, I saw that the next volume is the final one. And then I noticed that when I stopped reading it week by week, I actually had only six chapters or so left that I hadn't read, so rather than wait for the volume to come out (especially since no one seems to be scanning these last few volumes), I'd just go ahead and read those chapters. I didn't feel like spending a lot of time finding and downloading the individual chapters from the place I usually get raws, so I just sucked it up and read the scanlations, which were terrible as usual, but I got the gist.
I'll be writing up a real review once the final volume has been published, but my feelings on the ending are as meh as my feelings on the series as a whole have been. I loved the first eight or so volumes when it was a ridiculous gag manga and thought it went downhill from there. (I know I'm in the minority and most fans seem to hate those early volumes, but I love gag manga and thought the series was hilarious. I wish it had stayed a gag manga and not turned into what it did.)
In addition to that, I read volume 63 of Naruto. Or half of it, rather, since the first half was chapters I'd already read. Now that Reborn! is finished and I'm only following One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach, maybe I will try to get back to reading on a weekly basis, idk. (But in order to do so, I'd either have to spend a lot of time downloading all those individual chapters or else read scanlations. >_<
What do you think you'll read next?
I have volumes two and three of the 20th Anniversary Kindaichi series (I had actually bought vol. 2 when I went to Asahiya a few weeks ago, since no one had scanned it yet, but then someone uploaded it recently (which saves me the time of scanning it and also means I can just read it on my ipod now, which I prefer anyway) and somone uploaded vol. 3 soon after that), so I will probably read those and then some more Crimson Hero.
