So, I've decided I'm no longer going to post reviews about every fic I read. The completionist in me wants to keep doing it, but knowing that I have to think up something to say no matter how little there is to say about something is one of the things keeping me from reading more fic. I'm still going to post recs for stuff I really liked and want to gush about, and I'll probably occasionally post about fics that I didn't like as well, but the vast majority of stuff I read falls in the middle. It's okay, I enjoyed it well enough, or maybe I didn't, but it's not bad in a way that makes an interesting review.

Anyway, hopefully this will mean more rec posts from me?

I have still only just barely started poking around at Yuletide (man, I wish there was an easy way to get from the main collection to Madness fics), but have some recs for fics I read in the past couple days and really liked.

It ends in a small white room (3679 words) by russian_blue
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Pushing Daisies
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Charlotte Charles/Ned
Characters: Ned (Pushing Daisies), Charlotte Charles, Emerson Cod, Olive Snook
Summary: "Ever since I was a kid, I'd have this dream where somebody would find out what I could do. It starts off with lots of ice cream and balloons and ends in a small white room where little bits are cut out of me until there's nothing left to cut." -- Ned, Pushing Daisies

Yeah, just from the summary you know this isn't going to be your usual cheery Pushing Daisies fic. It's not quite what I would have liked it to be, but it's pretty cool and I really like the way Ned's powers were put to use (and the desert scene was awesome).

Five Times Tommie Lied To Margo (And One Time She Told The Truth) (2316 words) by oulfis
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Apartment 3-G
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Tommie/Lu Ann
Characters: Abigail "Tommie" Thompson, Lu Ann Powers, Margo Magee, Dr. Kelly
Summary: "I wasn’t crying," Tommie says, with blatant disregard for the truth. "I just happened to have Lu Ann as a patient today, and I wanted to update her chart." "Of course," says Margo, rolling her eyes. She thinks maybe Tommie has been lying more than usual lately, but before she can wonder why, she's already lost interest.

Yesssssssss! Comics Curmudgeon-influenced Apartment 3-G fic! Margo is just so awesomely Margo! I love how self-centered and oblivious she is, and the way each of her sections start off with "X is a full-time job!" XD

Erase and Reconstitute (3009 words) by equestrianstatue
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay - Michael Chabon
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Tracy Bacon/Sam Clay
Characters: Sam Clay, Tracy Bacon, Josef Kavalier
Summary: Everything good that Sammy had been or done or made was a fiction.

Okay, I'm not sure if my reading of this is what the author intended. When I came to the end of the fic I was like oh shit, and immediately went to read the comments, only to that only one other person seemed to have seen what I saw. And the author hasn't answered any comments, so I don't know if I'll ever know! Regardless, this is really well written. But if you read this, please come back and let me know what you thought? I want to talk about this with people!

I just read it, and I have the same interpretation, though it's also possible that Joe only thinks Sammy is alone because he can never meet Tracy. But with the scenes where Tracy explicitly compares Sammy to the sidekick, puts him on his shoulders, and turns up at random at night, it sadly makes a lot more sense that Sammy created Tracy.

Yeah, the whimsical Tracy scenes make a lot more sense looking back and seeing them as Sammy's fantasy. I didn't suspect anything until the final line, though. I guess it could be taken at face value, that Sammy really didn't make him up. But it feels so pointed that it's offset by itself, and that he comments to the room, and that no one answers.

Yes, exactly. It made me read back over the fic in an entirely different light, though the summary does set up that reading.

You're definitely not the only one; I read the last line and just went ...fuck, and with that + the summary I do think that's the intended reading. But of course the nice thing about stories like that is you can have them both ways at the same time, that delightful level of there-and-not-there.

Well, the author did answer my comment now and said that's how they meant it.
