You can click through to flickr for a larger version with notes. I've also just written up my notes below, for those who would prefer to read my ramblings in that form.
On the little shelf to the left are two stacks. The leftmost is books I'm reading(ish): Naming Nature by Carol Kaesuk Yoon, The Myth of Mars and Venus by Deborah Cameron, The History of White People by Nell Irvin Painter, The Wolves of the Calla by Stephen King, and the first two Tiffany Aching books by Terry Pratchett (haven't actually started those, but plan to soon). Under those are two manga to scan, Oppai wo Totta Kareshi by Serizawa Yukiko (this one is also to translate eventually) and Ekiben Hitori Tabi 1 (aka Bentos on a Train) by Hayase Jun and Sakurai Kai.
The stack to the right is mostly manga to scan: Clover 22 & 23 by Chiya Toriko, 3 Gatsu no Dai 2 Button by Mizusawa Megumi, Spicy Pink 1 & 2 by Yoshizumi Wataru, and Kamisama no Orgel 1-3 by Mizusawa Megumi. On top of those, though, is 4Teen by Ishida Ira, which is the book I'm actually reading most often right now. Underneath all that is Office 2007. This is out here because I still need to install it on my netbook, but just never seem to get around to it, because it means hooking up an external CD drive.
On the actual desktop are (from approx. left to right) my horrible headphones (have to jiggle the cord to get sound in the left one, plus the coating has all come off the left one for some reason), X-Box controller to allow me to play PC games such as Portal, tape dispenser, stapler, the receivers for my wireless mouse and keyboard (which sadly are not a set, so they each have a separate receiver), a timer (I don't know why I don't keep this in the kitchen, but I like having it on my desk), my Nintendo DS (currently with Chrono Trigger in), my phone, a couple of receipts for stuff I bought for
In front of all that is Basara 18. Currently out because I am writing up a summary of it (omg it is so long, wtf; I have already written ~1700 words and I'm about 2/3s through). Under that is a Card Captor Sakura bookmark. I have a ton of these that came in the manga. I sold the manga long ago (to someone who ripped me off, actually, meh), but kept the bookmarks because they are handy.
Big items are, of course, my spiffy monitor (I really like it and it was only $100!) and the scanner. The scanner is huge and takes up a lot of desk space, but it's really nice and I like it. On top is Aozora Yell 5, which I had just finished scanning and had yet to put in the giant box o' stuff for
Unlike my old desk, whose keyboard tray had broken off, this one still has a keyboard tray. On it are my Logitech keyboard and Microsoft mouse, which as mentioned above, sadly cannot use the same wireless receiver. :( I love this mouse; it's ergonomic and definitely way better for my wrist/forearm than a regular mouse. I do occasionally still get pain even with this, but so much less than I used to with a regular mouse. The keyboard is not ergo, just an old keyboard I've had for ages. I'm very used to it because I've had it so long, so I'm not looking forward to the day it dies and I have to get something new and different.
Under my desk is my Gateway computer (never had a Gateway before, but I'm quite pleased with this one) with external HD and iPod on top. I really love this computer. It bugs me sometimes that I can't just take my computer out in the living room anymore, but I'm glad I got a desktop instead of a laptop. So much more for so much less money. And it has such a huge HD I actually don't have to keep anything on the external anymore. I do hate that it's hard to plug stuff in down there and as you can see it gets super dusty on the side vent (I need to blow that out).
Next to that is the heater. I keep it there year round, because it makes a nice footrest even when I'm not using it as a heater. Also I don't want to have to deal with the tangle of cords to have to plug/unplug it, so best to just keep it there forever. Also in that area is the ever popular tangle of cords. This is actually one of the smaller, less tangled groups of cords in this room. Sadly, it is a room filled with stupid, messy cords, and there is really no way around that. :(
On the wall to the left you can see the Verizon FiOS box. Not sure what it does, exactly. It's not the modem; that's over on Carla's desk to the right of the edge of this photo. But for some reason it needs a separate box, with a huge-ass battery back-up inside that died recently and we had to pay ~$20 for a new one so it would stop beeping.
In the foreground is my super ancient chair. I can't remember how long I've had this, but it is very flattened out. Carla recently got a new one because hers broke, and it's like, wow, padding! I forgot chairs are supposed to have that and not just feel like you're sitting on a board! But this chair is very hardy and shows no signs of breaking, so I'm sure I'll have it for quite some time to come.
To the right is a shelf under the desk which has several stacks of stuff. In the back are a couple more manga to eventually scan and translate (GID 1 & 2 by Shouji Youko) and underneath are the last two Dark Tower books. The middle stack is Yamazaki Takako's Zero (full set), which I have read part of but then it was years and I forgot what happened, so I need to start from the beginning again. It's only like 11 vols. so I should do that, but I never seem to think about it down there. And the front stack has a vote by mail thingamabob with some old school Nancy Drew books underneath. Someone on my flist (meganbmoore?) was reading Nancy Drew earlier this year and made me want to reread these, but then I never have. But they are there! So maybe someday!
On the floor is a stack of CDs someone asked about buying and then never got back to me. I'm keeping them out in hopes that I'll eventually hear back, and also because I don't feel like reshelving them. Next to that, just barely visible in the photo, is my Hello Kitty trash can! I have a matching smaller one in the bedroom, too. I guess it was under a window at one point for a long time, because the top is totally sun-faded. Oops!
And above that, also just barely visible, are a couple drawers of stuff. With a printer on top (which you can't see at all). And since I'm already listing stuff outside of the picture, on top of the printer is my Wacom tablet and my blood pressure monitor (I need to find a better place for that). Also some papers to type up for my mom.
Whew! Oh, and above my desk are shelves of books, which did not get in the photo at all.
(I just wrote ~1000 words describing my desk. Why does fiction not write itself this fast!?)
