Yuletide reviews: xkcd, Ugly Betty, Penny Arcade, Paradise Kiss, and Kavalier & Clay

I decided to start at the end of the archive and go backwards, though I skipped over a lot of fandoms that had more than three fics each as I figured I'd make individual fandom review posts for those.

The Amazing Adventures of Hat Guy and the Girl Who Stole His Hat 5/5 Recommended
xkcd. 1000 words. It's not all fun and games, being an evil dude in an evil hat. Except, it kind of is.

Amazingly, this perfectly captures the feel of the comic. It's the perfect blend of n'aww and surreal for them.

OMG Velociraptors! 4/5 Recommended
xkcd. 300 words. It started with velociraptors and ended with the LHC.

Very bizarre little tale that totally feels like it could be a strip. On the one hand, it feels a little rushed, but on the other, that kind of makes it easier to imagine in comic form.

I Could Never Be Your Woman 3/5
Ugly Betty. 2200 words. Christina catches Daniel trying on women's clothes, trying to figure out what made Alex want to be a woman.

I like the idea of it, and I can definitely see Daniel doing that, but I wish the story had focused more on that and not become a vehicle for Daniel/Christina crossdressing sex (hot as that was).

Marc's Guide to Dating 1/5
Ugly Betty. 1000 words. Daniel decides he's "gay curious" and goes to Marc for advice.

This must be the worst fic I've ever found on the Yuletide archive. I can only assume it was written at the last minute by a drunk and sleep-deprived non-native speaker. It makes no sense, it's full of errors, it's a ridiculous plot that makes no attempt at plausibility, and the characters don't sound anything like Marc and Daniel (or indeed, any actual people anywhere). I've seen plenty of mediocre fic on Yuletide before, but this is FFN level bad.

Hunting High and Low 4/5 Recommended
A-ha's "Take on Me". 3100 words. Why is there always a pipe wrench when he needs one?

This is a story about the comic book half of the Take on Me video. It's pretty damn awesome, actually.

You're Too Blind to See 2/5
Penny Arcade. 1300 words. The thing was, it really had all started off not much different from Gabe's usual sort of insanity.

This is not that funny, actually. It's that unfortunate "trying to hard to be funny" thing that humor fic so often falls into.

Loathing 1/5
Penny Arcade. 1200 words. Ever since he'd first played against Tycho Brahe, Johnathan Gabriel hated his guts.

Wow, this is so bad. D: It's not funny at all, and the writing is just painful, really clunky and full of epithets.

The Meeting: or How Gabe Came to Fight the Devil 4/5 Recommended
Penny Arcade. 1200 words. "Everything was going great - That is, until he fought the devil."

This is backstory for the Penny Arcade video game, which I've never played, but you really only need to be familiar with the strip to enjoy this. The writing's great and the tone is really spot-on. Perfectly Penny Arcade.

Tears Dry on Their Own 2/5
Paradise Kiss. 2800 words. Time keeps moving forward, and Yukari still feels like she's racing to catch up. But she's not behind, not anymore.

This was okay, but it's more a summary than a proper story. Plus one of the main characters' names is misspelt through the whole thing... D:

Fumbling Cartography 2/5
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. 1200 words. A little vignette set the morning after a night with Tracy Bacon.

I feel like this would have worked better as a drabble to get its point across. At this length it just seems to go on and on about nothing, and the giganto paragraphs, which may work all right in books, just make onscreen reading difficult.

Is it bad of me that I immediately went to your 'I've never seen anything this bad' story and read that first?

The rest of these I will save until I can read them properly. That one I thought I might be able to handle while recovering from the flu and feeling sleep-deprived.

LOL! I probably would have clicked on it, too.

Really, I have seen an awful lot of mediocre/bad fic with Yuletide, but never anything quite that trainwrecky.

I couldn't make it all the way through "Loathings," it was just that bad. I didn't even try that Ugly Betty one.

Just imagine something even worse than Loathing. Much, much worse. Loathing is the type of badfic I expect from Yuletide, the other one was just completely incoherent. (I really wonder if someone was trying to dash it off for a Treat right before the deadline on the 24th, and I just wish people wouldn't do that.)
