torachan: onoda sakamichi from yowamushi pedal with a huge smile (onoda smile)
1. Not only is it my day off tomorrow, but it's my birthday, too! That was a nice coincidence.

2. I bought a couple manga tonight and I have to say, I am so happy I finally discovered how to buy ebooks on Amazon Japan. Not only do I prefer the interface of Amazon to the iTunes store (I hate that you can only buy things through iTunes itself and not a webpage), but I can use my own credit card rather than having to get someone to buy me a gift card. With iTunes I always hesitated to buy anything because once I used up the gift card amount, I would have to ask someone to buy me one again, and I'd have to pay up front for it. With Amazon, I am really casual about buying manga, because it's just like $4 here and there. I also like how it's just automatically downloaded to my kindle app and I can load it on my device or delete it in seconds, rather than having to go through iTunes (again).

3. Jasper was being super cute and silly while he was napping tonight. He actually got even sillier after I posted this picture. (I didn't think it was possible.)

torachan: a cartoon owl with the text "everyone is fond of owls" (everyone is fond of owls)
1. The city fireworks show was tonight and it was sooooooo loud and really scared the kitties, but they've all come out of hiding now and seem to be back to normal. I gave them lots of treats when they finally came out.

2. McDonald's has these really tasty blueberry cream pies right now. Carla loves the strawberry ones, too, and has gotten them a bunch, but while I thought those were okay, I wasn't super into them. But these blueberry ones are so good! And it's weird, because I usually like strawberry more than blueberry, but idk. The blueberry one is so much better.

3. Everybody loves this box so much. It's got nice flaps to make you feel hidden, and rustly paper inside to play with. Just the best box. Three out of three kitties recommend.

torachan: tavros from homestuck dressed as pupa pan (pupa pan)
1. I finished another book tonight, which makes thirty-three for the year so far. I have moved my initial goal from twenty to thirty and then to forty, but I'm thinking I'm going to have to move it again at this rate, because the year's only halfway through.

2. I spoke with the insurance claim person today and she said that it sounded like since we were both backing up, it would be a 50/50 thing, which would mean our insurance wouldn't go up and we would be liable for half the deductible. So, possibly still have to pay a lot in car repairs, depending on how much it costs to repair the damage, but it could be worse.

3. Look at this fluffy Chloe tum! She just loves the tummy scritches. :)

torachan: nepeta from homestuck (nepeta)
1. Went out to lunch with my mom today for my birthday (which is actually Monday). We went to California Pizza Kitchen and I got the carne asada pizza, which was delicious.

2. I got in a car accident on the way home, which sucks a whole lot, but it was on the minor side of accidents, so I'm trying to keep positive about that. There's only a little bit of bumper damage to my car and the other car and no one was hurt. (I had just pulled in a parking space and was readjusting my parking, and the other person was pulling out of her space opposite me, and...crunch.) I'm hoping the repairs don't cost too much, are covered by the insurance, and don't make my payments go up too high. *crosses fingers*

3. Jasper!

What are you currently reading?
I have just one chapter (about twenty pages) left to go in The New Jim Crow, so I will probably finish that either tonight or tomorrow. One thing I learned in the most recent chapter, which I had no idea about is that although prisoners cannot vote while imprisoned, the prison populations are used in creating voting districts and such. Most prisons are built in rural areas with very low, mostly white populations. These areas should hold very little power based on population, but because their numbers are padded by thousands of non-voting (mostly black) prisoners, they gain much more weight. Like the extreme gerrymandering in so many areas, this is nothing but an obvious power grab by republicans who know they don't have the numbers to support themselves in a fair vote. >:(

I'm also just a few chapters away from finishing The Library at Mount Char, too. This book is definitely a wild ride and I'm looking forward to seeing how it ends.

What did you recently finish reading?
I finished up Public Library and Other Stories yesterday, spurred on by the fact that it was due back at the library today. Overall I enjoyed the stories, but found the title and cover blurbs a bit misleading. There was no story called Public Library, and the stories were not so much library-themed as language- and book-themed. They were still good stories, but it wasn't quite what I was expecting.

What do you think you'll read next?
Well, I had pre-ordered the new 7 Seeds and just got an email from Amazon last night that it had been downloaded to my ipad, so I will probably be reading that pretty soon. The last chapter apparently came out this month, but I'm not sure how many more volumes that will be since I don't follow the chapters as they're published, but probably just one or two. Maybe more if she does bonus material like she did for Basara.

Chapter Summary: Souta's reaction when Mame tells him she broke up with Kawada-san is the last thing she was expecting.

Chapter 18: Something's Gotta Give
torachan: karkat from homestuck looking bored (karkat bored)
1. My library book was due tomorrow and I was afraid I might not finish it in time, but I ended up finishing it this afternoon after work, and then we took a walk to the library this evening and dropped it off. (Bonus Happiness: This branch has a fancy book drop off outside where it actually scans the book as you put it in the slot, so there's no more worries that you drop it off and then it doesn't get properly checked in and you're shown as overdue.)

2. We stopped at Hungry Pocket on the way back from the library and got lamb shawarma for dinner. Haven't been there in ages, but it's as delicious as ever.

3. Look at these two sweeties sleeping together!

torachan: a kitten looking out the window (chloe in window)
1. Work was so exhausting today for some reason, but it's over now, yay. Hopefully tomorrow won't be quite as hectic.

2. Jasper and Molly were actually playing together a little bit tonight! I'm really glad to see them interacting a little more, and would love it that continued.

3. I keep seeing people post about the heat elsewhere in the state and even just elsewhere in LA county, and I'm so glad we aren't getting it. D:

4. Is this a pretty Chloe or what!?

Summary: Sickly Kishida Jun has the ability to see ghosts, but in his opinion, it's a stupid power and nothing good ever comes of it. Considering the number of grisly situations he seems to find himself in after the ghost of his childhood friend Hayakawa Ryoko starts following him around, he may have a point.

Chapter Summary: In this two-parter, the occult club plans a retreat at a cabin in the woods only to be attacked by a serial killer.

Chapter 14: Night of the Slayer
Chapter 15: Night of the Slayer II
torachan: a cartoon kitten with a surprised/happy expression (chii)
1. I had one of those days where I was sleepy all day for some reason and really didn't feel like doing anything, but I did get some translating done, even if it wasn't as much as I'd hoped, and I read a bit, too.

2. We started watching a new (to us) show called Kim's Convenience. Just one season out so far, but apparently it was renewed for a second season, to air later this year. It's a Canadian sitcom about a Korean Canadian family in Toronto (the dad owns a convience store, thus the title). It's pretty cute and I'm liking it a lot so far.

3. I got some sweet cuddle time with Molly last night.

torachan: charlotte from bad machinery saying "oh the mysteries of the moth farm" (oh the mysteries of the moth farm)
1. Today was soooooo hectic. But now it's over and I have tomorrow off!

2. I hired four new cashiers over the past few days, so I'm really hoping at least some of them work out and we can stop being so short-handed.

3. I bought noodles and stuff to make hiyashi chuka for lunch tomorrow. I'm really looking forward to it.

4. Grapes have been on sale a lot lately and Carla keeps buying them and they taste good to her, but are too sour for me, but she finally got a batch that I like, so now I have grapes, too. :D

5. I know I just posted a Jasper pic yesterday and I like to alternate kitties, but this one of him sprawled out on the bed was just too cute! He's getting so big!

torachan: john from homestuck looking shocked (john shocked)
1. It wasn't as hot today as yesterday, and it was actually really foggy tonight. Hoping that trend continues.

2. Jasper is such a chatty kitty. He purrs a lot and he mews when he wants something and he makes that little clicking hunting sound when he's excited about a bird or a bug or a toy, but he also just chirps a lot when he's happy (especially when Carla's holding him and he's settling in for a nap). Here Carla caught him mid chirp.

torachan: a happy cartoon guy with the text "it's like a blast of happy up my ass" (blast of happy in my ass)
1. I posted a new chapter of Yasha, which means there are just five chapters left to go in the series. O_o This seemed like such a huge, overwhelming task when I started on it, and now it's almost done!

2. We had a lot of people call out today, so I was expecting it to be pretty hectic, but it was actually less hectic than I'd feared. (Still definitely on the hectic side. Stop being sick, people!)

3. Tried this strawberry chocolage gelato for dessert tonight and it was so good!

4. Speaking of good food, when we cleaned out the fridge the other day, I found that we had a ton of yakisoba noodles, so I made some for dinner tonight. I can't remember the last time I had yakisoba, and I always forget in between how much I actually like it. It's one of those ones that comes with three packages of noodles in one bag, and I made all three, so now we have lots of leftovers, too.

5. Carla spotted some sweet kitties in the bedroom today! (What Molly is sitting on is the cat carrier topped with a discarded blanket from when the weather was colder; it really should be washed and put away for summer, but since the cats are using it, we'll probably just end up leaving it out forever, lol.)

torachan: sei and rin from yasha (yasha)
Just one more volume to go! I can't believe we're almost there!

Chapter 58

And a full volume download for those who want it.
torachan: ewan mcgregor pulling his glasses down to look over the top (ewan glasses)
1. I woke up kind of early this morning, which is not what I normally want on a day off, but I actually felt rested and didn't feel sleepy during the day, so I'm actually happy about it.

2. It was pretty warm today, but not super hot. It seems like the rest of the state is in the midst of a terrible heatwave, but since we're right by the beach, we've escaped it here.

3. The other day we discovered a couple wasp nests along the back of the house. I read up on getting rid of them yourself and it seems soapy water does the trick, recommended to use one of those cannisters you attach to your hose so you can spray the soapy water directly on them. e didn't have one of those, and our hose in back is usable but the end has been stepped on or something so that it's bent out of shape and can't take any attachments, so I bought the soap cannister and a small hose on ebay (the two of them together were less than $20) and tonight I went out there and soaped up some wasps and now they're all taken care of! Very easy.

4. I finished translating two chapters of manga today.

5. Molly just loves getting up on the top shelf. Safe from annoying brothers and sisters!

torachan: (Default)
What are you currently reading?
I've actually been reading a lot this week! I'm about halfway through The New Jim Crow now. The first couple chapters were good reading, but also pretty much stuff I already knew, but the chapter I just finished focused on specific laws, Supreme Court decisions, etc. that I wasn't familiar with, and wow, that is even more fucked up than I realized. The Supreme Court has basically made it legal for cops and the legal system to discriminate based on race, and they've also made it so that individuals can't bring a suit against the police for discrimination.

In more lighter reading, I made a bit of progress on The Library at Mount Char and am about 20% done. I ended up having to go back and reread the first chapter because I was confused about the timeline. I'm definitely sucked in now, though, and will probably be reading it faster now because I really want to find out what the hell is going on, lol. One thing rereading the first chapter reminded me of that I didn't mention last time, though, is the terribad google translate Japanese. >_< The POV character is supposed to be fluent in every language in existence, so the least this guy could do is make sure if he's going to write out the words, rather than say "she said in Japanese", he consults someone other than a machine translation. I mean, it's not Dan Brown level bad, but it's grating, and there's really no excuse for it in this day and age.

I also picked up another library book the other day, which is actually a book of short stories about libraries. XD Or rather, with themes that could tie into an overarching library theme. I had expected more actual libraryness, but have so far been disappointed. The book is Public Library and Other Stories by Ali Smith, one of my favorite authors, so I'm still enjoying it even though it's not as libraryish as I had expected from the title and summary.

What did you recently finish reading?
I finished up A Chance Child in just a couple days. Rereading it as an adult, it's still pretty weird, especially the first few chapters when you're just thrown right in and have no idea what's going on. But it makes more sense now, as I think a lot of it went over my head when I first read it. It's a good story and I'm glad I had a chance to read it again.

I also read volume 28 of Kimi ni Todoke, which is the last of what's currently out, though I think 29 is coming out in August. I always forget how much I love this series.

And speaking of adorable manga, I read volume 3 of Baby, Kokoro no Mama ni! For the first two volumes, I just read it as I was translating it, but this time I ended up reading the whole volume at once. It's such a cute series and I'm sad that it seems to be on hiatus or something. (Though there is still one more volume out after this.)

Then, in my quest to clear off even more stuff from my ipad, I decided to start in on Y: The Last Man, which I have been curious about for a long time, but just never got around to reading. I've read the first three volumes so far, and while it's interesting, it's definitely not a huge hit with me.

What do you think you'll read next?
Just keeping on with all the stuff in progress, mainly, and reading the rest of Y.
torachan: maru the cat sitting in a bucket (maru)
1. Long, busy day at work today, but tomorrow's already my day off again!

2. I'm really excited about Mario Odyssey, and an October release is sooner than I expected (I was totally resigned to Christmas).

3. I got another chapter of manga finished. I feel like I've been on a pretty good productivity streak this month. Hopefully it continues!

4. I love when Chloe stretches out along the back of the sofa for a nap. For some reason she really likes to sleep with her arms outstretched.

torachan: arale from dr slump dressed in a penguin suit and smiling (arale penguin)
1. I decided to take the day off today. I was thinking about it since last night, and there really wasn't anything urgent I needed to do today, and Tuesday is one of the days when we have the most people scheduled, so everyone should be able to take care of stuff on their own...so I just stayed home. :D

2. I posted manga! I feel like poor Gunjo is a cursed series. I have had so much trouble getting it out due to the typesetters having problems. Each time I change typesetters, it seems like it's going to get better, and then they end up having problems, too. D: But finally after two months of radio silence, the current typesetter got back to me and said she had the chapter done, so yay!

3. The date of the first Breath of the Wild DLC was announced, and it's June 30th! You know what that means? I have to finish my current game before then, so I can start a new one when it comes out! I am near endgame and have been kind of dragging my heels on finishing up, because I want to upgrade all my armor, but that involves grinding, and I've done most of the exploring and just have a few last things to wrap up, basically, so it's a combination of the fun part being over and not wanting the game to end. But I'm really excited about the DLC and I think I want to enjoy it on a new, fresh game, so I played some more tonight, got a few more shrines (just eight more to go!) and upgraded a few more armor pieces. (I think I might give up on the idea of upgrading them all...) I really do love this game.

4. As of today we have taken a walk every day for a whole month. Although Carla's health is still not great, she has definitely seen an improvement in stamina from these daily walks, so hopefully we can keep this up.

5. I've got a silly Jasper.

torachan: two women embracing (gunjo)

Chapter 25
torachan: palmon smiling (palmon)
1. We cleaned out the fridge today and it looks so much better. There was some really ancient stuff in there. D:

2. I also got some other housework done, ran some errands, and did some translating, so I feel pretty good about today overall.

3. Look at these sweet kittens!
